Bulgaria Visa for Zambia Citizens 2026

Visa Required

Zambian citizens need a Schengen Type C visa to enter Bulgaria; apply through the Bulgarian Embassy in Pretoria or an authorized visa centre, pay around EUR 80, and allow about 15 working days for processing.

Guide last updated September 26, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date, with at least 2 blank pages
  • Completed and signed Schengen visa application form
  • Two recent passport-size photos (35mm x 45mm, white background, taken within the last 6 months)
  • Proof of accommodation for the full stay (hotel booking confirmation or a signed invitation letter from a host in Bulgaria)
  • Round-trip flight reservation
  • Proof of sufficient funds - bank statements for the last 3 months showing at least EUR 50 per day of stay
  • Travel medical insurance valid across the Schengen area with minimum EUR 30,000 coverage
  • Proof of employment or business registration
  • Biometrics (fingerprints and digital photo) captured in person at the visa application centre
  • Cover letter explaining the purpose and itinerary of the trip

Visa types

  • Airport transit visa (Type A) - for travelers only passing through a Bulgarian international airport
  • Short-stay Schengen visa (Type C) - single or multiple entry, valid for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period; fee around EUR 80
  • National long-stay visa (Type D) - for work, study, or family reunification; requires additional supporting permits and is issued for longer stays

How to apply

  • Zambia has no resident Bulgarian embassy, so applications are handled by the Embassy of Bulgaria in Pretoria, South Africa, which covers Zambia, or through an accredited visa application centre where available.
  • Complete the Schengen visa application form online and print it
  • Book an appointment with the Bulgarian embassy in Pretoria or the designated visa centre
  • Attend in person to submit documents and biometrics
  • Pay the visa fee in the local currency equivalent (cash or card, depending on the centre)
  • Track your application and collect your passport once a decision is made

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: approximately EUR 80 (about USD 85), payable in local currency equivalent
  • Visa centre service fee: approximately USD 25-30 if applying through VFS Global or a similar intermediary
  • Total estimated cost: USD 110-120
  • Standard processing time: 15 calendar days from the date of a complete application
  • Express processing is not generally offered for Schengen applications lodged from Zambia; complex cases can take up to 30-45 days

Tips for Zambia travelers

  • Apply at least 4-6 weeks before travel since the nearest processing embassy is in Pretoria, South Africa, and courier/travel time adds delay
  • Common rejection reasons for Zambian applicants: insufficient proof of funds, unclear or inconsistent travel itinerary, missing travel insurance, or weak ties shown to Zambia (job letter, property, family)
  • Where available, use VFS Global rather than direct embassy submission for faster appointment slots
  • Schengen visas are rarely extended from inside Bulgaria - apply for the exact dates you need and add a short buffer
  • Keep copies of all submitted documents and the appointment confirmation until you have re-entered Zambia
