What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years
  • Completed Schengen visa application form
  • Two recent biometric photos (35x45mm, white background)
  • Proof of accommodation for the whole stay
  • Round-trip flight reservation
  • Travel health insurance with at least EUR 30,000 coverage valid across Schengen
  • Bank statements for the last 3 months and proof of employment/income
  • Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) captured in person at the application centre

Visa types

  • Schengen Tourist visa (Type C) - single, double or multiple entry, up to 90 days in any 180-day period
  • Schengen Business visa (Type C) - for conferences and business meetings
  • National visa (Type D) - for study, work or family reunification, valid longer than 90 days
  • Transit visa - for airport transit where required

How to apply

  • Book an appointment with VFS Global Austria (serving Zambia, often via Johannesburg or Nairobi regional centres)
  • Complete the application form and assemble the document checklist
  • Attend the appointment to submit documents and biometrics
  • Pay the visa fee and service centre fee at submission
  • Collect the passport with the visa sticker, or arrange courier return

Fees & processing time

  • Schengen visa fee: EUR 90 (about USD 95) for adults
  • VFS service fee: typically EUR 25-30 on top of the visa fee
  • Total cost estimate: EUR 115-125
  • Standard processing time: up to 15 calendar days, can extend to 30-45 days in complex cases
  • Priority/express processing is not generally offered for Schengen visas

Tips for Zambia travelers

  • Apply 3-4 weeks before travel, but not more than 6 months ahead
  • Common rejection reasons: weak travel history, insufficient funds, unclear purpose of travel, missing insurance
  • Use the VFS Global application centre rather than approaching the embassy directly, where this is the designated channel
  • If visiting multiple Schengen countries, apply at the consulate of the main destination or first point of entry
  • Extensions within the Schengen area are only granted in exceptional circumstances (medical emergency, force majeure)
