UK citizens can enter Ukraine visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period; however, the FCDO advises against all travel to Ukraine due to the ongoing conflict, which overrides the normal visa-free entry.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least the duration of your stay (6 months validity advisable)
  • Proof of onward or return travel
  • Evidence of accommodation for your stay
  • Proof of sufficient funds, occasionally checked at the border
  • No visa application or photo needed in advance for stays under 90 days
  • No biometrics beyond standard passport control checks
  • Comprehensive travel insurance is essential - standard policies are void given the FCDO advisory, and specialist war-risk cover is needed

Visa types

  • Visa exemption (used by most UK visitors in normal times): free, up to 90 days within any 180-day period, for tourism or short business visits
  • Long-stay/immigration visa: required for stays beyond 90 days or for work/study, applied for through the Ukrainian Embassy in London
  • Note: commercial flights to Ukraine are currently suspended and the airspace is closed - entry in practice is overland from neighbouring countries only

  • UK passport holders are visa-exempt for up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period under normal circumstances
  • The FCDO currently advises against all travel to Ukraine because of the Russian invasion and ongoing military action - this advisory should be the overriding factor in any travel decision, regardless of visa-free eligibility
  • Martial law is in effect across Ukraine, with regional curfews, air raid alerts, and travel restrictions that can change with little notice
  • Consular assistance from the UK government is severely limited inside Ukraine under current conditions

Fees & processing time

  • Visa-free entry: no fee charged for stays up to 90 days
  • Long-stay visa (if applicable): fee payable at the Ukrainian Embassy in London, processing typically 5-10 working days
  • No VFS/BLS agency involvement for short visa-free stays
  • Given flight suspensions, practical entry is via land border crossings from Poland, Romania, Moldova, Hungary, or Slovakia
