Uganda Visa for United Kingdom Citizens 2026

United Kingdom citizens must obtain an online Uganda e-Visa (evisa_eta) before travel via https://visas.immigration.go.ug/; Tourist e-Visa costs USD 50, valid for 90 days with a maximum stay of 90 days per visit, processing typically 2–3 working days, with approval delivered by email as an e-Visa.

What you need

  • Passport validity: your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry into Uganda and have at least one blank page for stamping (even though you apply for an e-Visa, immigration may check blank-page guidance).
  • Specific forms: there is no separate DS-forms for Uganda e-Visa; complete the online application at https://visas.immigration.go.ug/ and upload required documents within the portal.
  • Financial proof: no fixed bank statement is required for the e-Visa application; you should have access to sufficient funds for your stay, but there is no minimum amount published.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: in the online application you should provide the address of your Uganda accommodation (hotel name and address) and an intended date of arrival; a return or onward ticket is recommended.
  • Photo spec: digital photo requirements typically include a recent passport-style photograph (600x600 px minimum, JPEG), white background, head and shoulders visible, no shadows, no glasses with tinted lenses; file size up to 4 MB.
  • Biometrics: biometrics are collected on arrival at the port of entry in Uganda (immigration desk) and not in advance through a separate embassy appointment.
  • Travel health insurance: not required for the e-Visa itself; travel health insurance is recommended. Yellow fever vaccination certificate may be required if you are coming from a country with yellow fever risk or if inspected by Ugandan authorities; UK travelers are advised to carry a valid yellow fever certificate if applicable and to check current requirements before travel.

Visa types

  • Tourist visa (e-Visa) – Official name: Tourist visa (e-visa) – Single entry; Valid for 90 days from the date of issue; Maximum stay per entry: 90 days; approximate fee: USD 50.
  • East Africa Tourist Visa (EATV) – Official name: East Africa Tourist Visa (EATV) – Multiple entries across Uganda/Kenya/Rwanda; Valid 90 days; approximate fee: USD 100.
  • Business visa (e-Visa) – Official name: Business visa (e-visa) – Single entry; Valid 90 days; approximate fee: USD 100.
  • Student visa (e-Visa) – Official name: Student visa (e-visa) – For study in Uganda; typically multiple entries depending on study permit; approximate fee: USD 100.
  • Work visa (e-Visa) – Official name: Work visa (e-visa) – For employment in Uganda; usually multiple entries; approximate fee: USD 150.
  • Transit visa (e-Visa) – Official name: Transit visa (e-visa) – Short stay for transiting through Uganda (usually up to 3 days); approximate fee: USD 20.
  • Note: The Uganda e-Visa portal lists current categories and exact fees; confirm at the time of application as rates may change.

Application process

  • "How to apply online":
  • Visit https://visas.immigration.go.ug/
  • Create an account or sign in; select the visa type you need and start a new application
  • Complete applicant details (passport data page, personal information, travel plans) and upload required documents (passport bio-page scan, digital photo, yellow fever certificate if applicable, invitation letter for business, hotel reservations, etc.)
  • Pay the visa fee plus any online processing/service charges using a card or other accepted online payment methods; the portal will show the amount in USD and may convert to UGX automatically
  • Submit the application and note your reference number; you will receive status updates by email
  • Once approved, you will receive an e-Visa approval letter by email; print it and carry it to Uganda
  • On arrival in Uganda, present your passport, e-Visa approval letter, and any supporting documents; biometrics may be collected at the border
  • If additional documents are requested, provide them via the portal or at the immigration desk as instructed
  • Processing time: standard processing is typically 2–3 working days; expedited (urgent) processing options may be available for an additional fee; approval is sent by email as an e-Visa.

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee (USD) and approximate local currency (UGX): Tourist USD 50 (approx. UGX 180,000–190,000 using a rough 1 USD ≈ 3600 UGX rate); East Africa Tourist Visa USD 100 (approx. UGX 360,000); Business USD 100; Student USD 100; Work USD 150; Transit USD 20.
  • VFS/BLS service fee: not applicable for Uganda online e-Visa; all processing is through the official online portal unless stated otherwise.
  • Total cost estimate: depends on visa type; a typical single-entry e-Visa for tourism or business ranges from USD 50–100; EATV is USD 100; consider any additional online processing/priority fees shown during application.
  • Standard processing time: 2–3 working days; express/priority processing options may be available for an additional fee and will be shown during application.
  • Express/priority option: available in some cases via the online portal; fees vary and are shown at checkout.

Tips for United Kingdom travelers

  • Apply well in advance: start the e-Visa application at least 2–3 weeks before travel; allow extra time if you need to obtain supporting documents (yellow fever certificate, invitation letters, hotel bookings).
  • Common rejection reasons for UK applicants: passport validity less than six months from entry, mismatch between passport data and application, missing or incorrect travel details, failure to upload required documents (passport page scan, photo), lack of yellow fever certificate when required, or discrepancies in purpose of visit.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy application: Uganda operates the online e-Visa system; there is no separate VFS/BLS submission for standard e-Visas. Only use the official portal for the e-Visa; contact the Ugandan Embassy/High Commission only for visa types not offered online or for emergencies.
  • Travel advisories and bilateral notes: check the UK government travel advice for Uganda (GOV.UK) and the Ugandan Ministry of Internal Affairs/MFA notices for any security or health advisories before you travel.
  • Extension options inside Uganda: visa extensions are possible by applying at the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control (DCIC) in Kampala or at Entebbe/entry points; extensions are subject to approval and fees; plan ahead if you anticipate staying beyond your original visa validity.
