What you need

Visa types

  • Visa exemption (used by most UK tourists): free, up to 90 days within any 180-day period, for tourism or short business visits (no paid work)
  • e-Visa: no longer required for UK passport holders since the visa-free rule applies, but still used by some other nationalities via evisa.gov.tr
  • Residence permit (ikamet): required if staying beyond 90 days or 180 days cumulatively, applied for in-country through the Directorate General of Migration Management
  • Work permit: required separately for any paid employment

  • On-arrival processing: standard passport control time, typically a few minutes, though major airports like Istanbul can have long queues at peak times

  • Make sure your passport has no visible damage - Turkish border officials have refused entry over torn or water-damaged passports
