UK citizens can enter Thailand visa-free for tourism for up to 30 days when arriving by air (15 days by land) and may extend for a further 30 days at Thai Immigration, totaling up to 60 days.

What you need

  • Passport validity: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry into Thailand.
  • Forms: No pre-arrival visa application is required for visa-free entry. You will be checked by Thai Immigration on arrival.
  • Financial proof: It is recommended to carry evidence of funds of at least 10,000 THB per person or 20,000 THB per family (cash or cash equivalents) to show you can support yourself during your stay.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: Have evidence of onward or return travel (flight ticket) and your intended accommodation address in Thailand (hotel booking or address of stay).
  • Photo spec: Not required for visa-free entry. If you plan to apply for other routes, bring a recent passport photo.
  • Biometrics: No pre-departure biometrics. Immigration officers may perform standard checks on arrival.
  • Travel health insurance: Not mandatory, but strongly recommended to cover medical costs during your stay.

  • Visa exemption (Tourism) – Official name: Visa exemption for tourism (no visa required). Validity: 30 days if entering by air; 15 days if entering by land. Max stay: 30 days (by air) or 15 days (by land). Entry: Visa-free, single-entry. Fee: 0 THB.
  • Non-immigrant Visa TR (Tourist) – Official name: Non-immigrant Visa TR (Tourist). Validity: 60 days from entry (initial). Max stay per entry: 60 days. Entry: Single-entry (with extension available). Approx fee: 2,000 THB.
  • Non-immigrant Visa B (Business) – Official name: Non-immigrant Visa B (Business). Validity: typically 90 days per entry. Entry: Single-entry or multiple-entry. Approx fee: 2,000 THB.
  • Non-immigrant Visa ED (Education) – Official name: Non-immigrant Visa ED (Education). Validity: typically 90 days per entry. Entry: Single-entry or multiple-entry. Approx fee: 2,000 THB.
  • Non-immigrant Visa O (Other) – Official name: Non-immigrant Visa O (Other) (includes certain purposes like family visits, volunteering). Validity: varies by consulate; commonly 90 days per entry. Approx fee: 2,000 THB.
  • Non-immigrant Visa O-A (Long Stay – Retirement) – Official name: Non-immigrant Visa O-A (Long Stay, Retirement). Validity: 1 year initially (with possible annual renewals). Approx fee: 2,000 THB.

Entry process (visa-free)

  • How to enter: You do not apply online in advance. Upon arrival, present your passport at the Immigration checkpoint.
  • Steps on arrival: 1) Have your passport valid for at least 6 months, 2) Present onward/return ticket, 3) Show proof of accommodation or address in Thailand if requested, 4) Immigration stamps your passport with the visa-free entry.
  • Stay duration and extensions: The standard visa-free stay is 30 days if entering by air or 15 days if entering by land. If you wish to stay longer, you can apply for a 30-day extension at a Thai Immigration Office (e.g., Bangkok) by paying 1,900 THB. Extensions are granted at the discretion of immigration.

Tips for United Kingdom travelers

  • How far in advance to plan: There is no pre-travel visa application for visa-free entry. If you plan to stay longer than 60 days total, arrange a longer-stay visa (e.g., Tourist TR, Non-immigrant B, or Retirement O-A) before you travel by applying at the Royal Thai Embassy in London or the Thai Consulate in Manchester; start 4–8 weeks ahead and allow 6–12 weeks for processing, depending on category.
