Visa types

  • Visa exemption (used by most UK tourists): free, stamped on arrival, up to 60 days, single entry per stamp
  • Destination Thailand Visa (DTV): for remote workers/long-stay visitors, 5-year multiple entry, 180 days per stay, fee THB 10,000, applied for in advance
  • Tourist visa (TR): for those wanting a pre-arranged 60-day stay with extension options, applied for at a Thai embassy/consulate before travel, fee approx THB 2,000 (GBP 40-45)
  • Non-immigrant visas (B for business/work, O for marriage/retirement, ED for study) require a specific category application and supporting documents

Entry conditions

  • The 60-day visa exemption stamp is given automatically at immigration for UK passport holders - no application needed in advance
  • No work is permitted on a visa-exempt entry
  • Be ready to show your return/onward ticket and accommodation details if asked by the immigration officer
  • A one-time 30-day extension is available at any Immigration Bureau office in Thailand for THB 1,900
  • Overstaying incurs a fine of THB 500 per day (capped at THB 20,000) and can lead to a travel ban on repeated or long overstays

Tips for United Kingdom travelers

  • The 60-day exemption is generous, but if your trip may run longer, plan your one-time 30-day extension early rather than risk an overstay fine
  • Immigration occasionally asks to see a return flight and hotel booking - have printouts or offline copies ready, not just emails
  • Border runs to "reset" the visa exemption are discouraged and increasingly scrutinised by immigration officers
  • If you plan to work remotely for an extended stay, apply for the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) before travelling rather than relying on tourist entries
  • Keep the TM6 arrival/departure slip (or its digital equivalent via the TDAC system) safe until you leave the country
