UK citizens must obtain an eVisa before traveling to Rwanda; apply online at https://www.migration.gov.rw/ for Tourist, Business, Student or Work visas; standard Tourist eVisa starts at USD 30 with typical processing of 3–5 days.

What you need

  • Passport validity: your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry into Rwanda; ensure you have at least 1 blank page for entry/exit stamps.
  • Specific forms: there is no paper DS-160 or VAF form for Rwanda; complete the online eVisa application on the official portal at https://www.migration.gov.rw/ and upload supporting documents within the portal.
  • Financial proof: there is no published minimum bank balance requirement for the eVisa; you should have sufficient funds to cover your stay and be prepared to show bank statements or cash evidence if requested by immigration on arrival.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: proof of accommodation is not mandatory for the online eVisa application, but you should have confirmed hotel/bookings or invitation details; have a return or onward travel ticket available if asked by border officials.
  • Photo spec: upload a passport-style photo as part of the online application; color image with a white background; head and shoulders visible; typical size around 51 x 51 mm (2 x 2 inches) or as specified by the portal.
  • Biometrics: biometric data is not submitted separately online; biometric data may be collected at entry to Rwanda if requested by immigration; ensure your passport details match the photo you upload.
  • Travel health insurance: not mandatory for the eVisa, but it is strongly recommended to have travel medical insurance that covers illness and medical emergencies during your stay.

Visa types

  • Tourist visa (Tourist visa): validity 30 days, single-entry, approximate fee USD 30; local currency (RWF) equivalent around 34,000–40,000 RWF.
  • Business visa (Business visa): validity typically 30 days, single-entry, approximate fee USD 50; local currency equivalent around 56,000–60,000 RWF.
  • Student visa (Student visa): validity equal to the duration of the study program (often multiple entry depending on the program), approximate fee USD 60; local currency equivalent around 67,000–70,000 RWF.
  • Work visa (Work visa / Employment visa): validity up to 1 year (extensions possible), single-entry, approximate fee USD 100; local currency equivalent around 110,000–115,000 RWF.
  • Transit visa (Transit visa): validity up to 48 hours, single-entry, approximate fee USD 20; local currency equivalent around 22,000–25,000 RWF.

Application process

  • How to apply online: go to https://www.migration.gov.rw/ and create an account, log in, choose the visa type (Tourist, Business, Student, Work), and start your online application.
  • Steps: complete applicant details and travel information; upload required documents (passport bio page scan, passport photo, travel itinerary, hotel booking or invitation letter, return flight booking); pay the visa fee online; submit the application.
  • Fee (local + USD) and processing: pay the listed visa fee in USD via the portal; processing time is typically 3–5 working days for eVisa approval.
  • How approval arrives: you will receive an email with the eVisa authorization; download and print the eVisa confirmation to present on arrival in Rwanda.

Tips for United Kingdom travelers

  • How far in advance to apply: submit your eVisa application at least 7–10 days before travel to allow for processing and any unexpected delays.
