UK citizens can enter Rwanda without a visa - free entry permits are issued on arrival and allow stays of up to 30 days.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry
  • A return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or host details) for the stay
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for the length of stay
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate if arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission
  • No photo or biometric submission is required in advance; fingerprints and a photo are captured on arrival at the border
  • Travel health insurance is recommended though not mandatory

Visa types

  • Rwanda does not require a visa for UK citizens; a free entry permit replaces a visa for short tourist and business stays
  • Visitors needing to stay longer than 30 days must apply for an extension or a different permit (e.g. a work or resident permit) through the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration

Entry conditions

  • Free entry permit issued at the port of entry, valid for up to 30 days from the date of arrival
  • No employment is permitted under this entry permit - business visitors may attend meetings but not take up paid work
  • Travellers must show their passport, a return ticket and proof of accommodation to the immigration officer on arrival
  • Extensions of up to a further 30 days can be requested online via the Irembo portal or in person at immigration offices in Kigali before the initial permit expires

Fees & processing time

  • Entry permit on arrival: free of charge
  • Extension fee (if needed): payable through the Irembo e-government portal, typically a modest fixed fee in Rwandan francs
  • No advance processing time - the permit is issued at the border, usually within minutes

Tips for United Kingdom travelers

  • Carry a printed or digital copy of your accommodation booking and return ticket, as border officers may ask to see them
  • Have proof of yellow fever vaccination ready if you are transiting through or have recently visited an at-risk country, even though it is not usually required for direct UK arrivals
  • Register any planned stay extension well before day 30 to avoid overstay penalties
  • Kigali International Airport immigration is generally fast and efficient for UK passport holders
  • Keep a note of the Rwanda Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration contact details in case of any border queries
