UK citizens can visit Mongolia visa-free for up to 30 days per entry for tourism; a visa is required only for longer or multiple-entry stays.

What you need

  • Passport valid at least 6 months beyond your entry date, with at least one blank page
  • No visa required for stays of 30 days or less
  • Onward or return ticket recommended
  • Travel insurance strongly advised, including medical evacuation cover
  • Biometrics are not collected for visa-free entrants; they apply only to e-Visa applicants

  • Visa-free tourist entry: 30 days, single entry, no fee
  • Tourist e-Visa (for stays over 30 days or multiple entries): up to 90 days validity, applied for via evisa.mn, fee around USD 53
  • Business and Work visas require a sponsor/invitation letter and are issued through a Mongolian embassy

Tips for United Kingdom travelers

  • Entry is usually processed at Chinggis Khaan International Airport (Ulaanbaatar) or at land crossings with Russia and China
  • Keep proof of accommodation handy even though it's rarely checked for short visa-free stays
  • Register with Mongolian Immigration Agency in Ulaanbaatar if staying near or beyond 30 days
  • Carry cash in Mongolian tögrög outside Ulaanbaatar, as card acceptance is limited
  • Given the harsh climate, get insurance that covers medical evacuation
