UK citizens can enter Monaco visa-free for up to 90 days in a 180-day period; there is no Monaco-issued visa for short stays, but longer stays or work require French/Schengen routes via France Visas (France long-stay visa/VLS-TS).

What you need

  • Passport validity: Passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned date of departure from the Schengen area, and your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years.
  • Specific forms: There are no Monaco-specific visa forms for UK nationals staying up to 90 days. If you plan to stay longer or to work or study, you would apply via France Visas (France's visa system) for a long-stay visa (visa de long séjour), commonly issued as a VLS-TS (visa long séjour valant titre de séjour).
  • Financial proof: There is no fixed Monaco daily amount. You should be able to cover your stay. Provide bank statements for the last 3–6 months, recent payslips, or an official sponsorship letter.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: Provide proof of accommodation for the duration of your stay (hotel bookings or host invitation letter) and evidence of onward or return travel.
  • Photo specification: One recent passport photo (35x45 mm) with a white background, taken within the last 6 months, showing the full face and neutral expression.
  • Biometrics: Biometrics are not required for visa-free short stays at entry. If you apply for a long-stay visa via France, you will need to provide biometrics at the visa center/consulate.
  • Travel health insurance: Travel medical insurance is not mandatory for entry, but highly recommended. For any Schengen visa application, insurance must cover medical emergencies with a minimum of 30,000 EUR and be valid in the entire Schengen area, including repatriation.

  • Short-stay/Tourist or Business (Schengen Type C): Official name if applying via Schengen routes; Monaco does not issue a visa for UK citizens for short stays. Validity: up to 12 months (depends on purpose); Max stay: up to 12 months per visa; Entry: multiple entries (varies by issuance); Approximate fee: 99 EUR.
  • Student (via France long-stay route): Official name: France long-stay visa – student category; Validity: duration of studies (up to 12 months per visa renewal; often multiple entries); Fee: 99 EUR.
  • Work (via France long-stay route): Official name: France long-stay visa – employee/worker category (and potentially travail authorization); Validity: typically up to 12 months; Entry: multiple entries; Fee: 99 EUR. Note: Working in Monaco generally requires a Monaco work permit; a French long-stay visa does not automatically grant permission to work in Monaco.

Application process

  • How to apply online: Monaco does not offer an online e-visa. There is no Monaco e-visa portal. For short stays, UK nationals travel visa-free within the 90/180 rule. For long stays, use France Visas (france-visas.gouv.fr) and apply via the designated French visa center in the UK (e.g., TLScontact/VFS as applicable) or via the French Consulate.
  • How to apply (long-stay/Sticker visa): Apply through France Visas (france-visas.gouv.fr) for a visa de long séjour (VLS-TS). Prepare documents (passport, photos, proof of purpose, accommodation, funds, travel insurance, etc.), book an appointment at the appropriate visa center, submit in person, provide biometrics if requested, pay fees, and await decision. If approved, your visa sticker will be placed in your passport.
  • Documents checklist (typical for long-stay via France): valid passport, completed visa application form, two recent passport photos, proof of accommodation in France/Schengen zone, proof of sufficient funds, travel insurance covering 30,000 EUR, proof of purpose (university acceptance letter, work contract, or family ties), return/onward ticket, and any additional documents requested by the consulate.
  • Fee & payment method: For long-stay France visas, standard fee is about 99 EUR; payment is usually by bank card or online at the France Visas portal or at the visa center; check the exact method at the time of application.
  • Processing time: Short-stay Schengen visas typically take around 15 calendar days (can be longer up to 60 days in exceptional circumstances). Long-stay visa processing may take several weeks to a few months depending on the case and the consulate; plan accordingly.
  • Interview requirement: An interview may be requested for long-stay Visa applications at the consulate or visa center.

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee (official): Short-stay (if applicable): 80 EUR for adults; 40 EUR for children 6–11; free for children under 6. Note: UK citizens visiting Monaco for short stays are visa-free; the 80 EUR would apply only if a Schengen short-stay visa is issued.
  • Long-stay France visa fee: 99 EUR (adult). This applies to visa de long séjour (VLS-TS) when applicable.
  • VFS/TLS or visa center service fee: Service charges vary by center and country; typically in the range of about 20–40 EUR, depending on the center and whether online payment is used. Check with the specific center for exact amounts.
  • Total cost estimate: Short-stay visa fees are not payable for visa-free visitors; long-stay via France Visas approximately 99 EUR plus service fees (center-dependent).
  • Standard processing time: Short-stay Schengen: about 15 days; up to 60 days in exceptional circumstances. Long-stay: several weeks to a few months depending on case and consulate.
  • Express/priority option: Some centers offer expedited processing for long-stay visas or urgent cases; additional fees apply if available. Availability depends on the consulate and center.

Tips for United Kingdom travelers

  • How far in advance to apply: For short stays, plan with enough time to account for border checks; for long stays, apply 2–3 months in advance; in peak periods (summer), apply earlier.
  • Common rejection reasons for United Kingdom applicants specifically: Insufficient proof of funds or accommodation, travel insurance not meeting required coverage, unclear purpose of visit, lack of ties to the UK (to demonstrate return), invalid or insufficient passport validity, incomplete documentation, and inconsistencies in travel plans.
  • VFS/TLS centers vs direct embassy application: Monaco itself does not handle visa processing; most UK-based applicants will use the France Visas system and designated visa centers (TLScontact or VFS Global) or the French Consulate for long-stay visas. Ensure you use the official France Visas site and the correct visa center for your post.
  • Travel advisories or bilateral notes: Always check the UK government travel advice for Monaco and France, and review gouv.mc for Monaco’s entry rules. ETIAS is not yet in effect in 2024; verify latest entry requirements before travel.
  • Extension options inside Monaco: Extensions beyond the 90-day visa-free period are not available under the visa-free regime. To stay longer, you must leave the Schengen area and pursue a long-stay visa via France Visas or seek Monaco-residency routes via Monaco authorities; working or residing in Monaco typically requires a Monaco-issued work or residency permit, not a simple visa.
