UK citizens can visit Greece visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period under Schengen rules, with an ETIAS travel authorisation (around EUR 7) expected to become mandatory from late 2026.

What you need

  • UK passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years
  • Return or onward ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or host invitation)
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for your stay, occasionally requested at the border, particularly for island entry points
  • Travel health insurance covering at least EUR 30,000 is recommended
  • No biometrics for visa-free entry; passport stamped on entry and exit
  • Once ETIAS launches, a short online pre-travel form and small fee will be required

  • No visa category applies for short visa-exempt stays.
  • Schengen short-stay exemption: tourism, business, and family visits, up to 90 days in any 180-day period, multiple entries
  • Greek national D-visa: for stays over 90 days, study, or digital nomad status; applied for at the Greek Embassy in London
  • Golden Visa / investment residence permit: for property-based residency, applied for separately through Greek authorities

Entry conditions

  • UK citizens may stay in Greece, combined with the rest of the Schengen area, for up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period without a visa.
  • No paid work is permitted under the visa-free allowance
  • Border officers, especially at smaller island airports, can ask for proof of accommodation, return travel, and funds
  • Days spent in other Schengen countries count toward the same 90-day limit
  • Extensions are granted only in exceptional circumstances via the local Aliens and Immigration Office
  • Overstaying risks an entry ban across the Schengen area, typically 1-3 years

  • ETIAS, once operational, is expected to cost EUR 7 per application (free under 18 or over 70), usually approved within minutes and occasionally up to 96 hours
  • ETIAS validity is 3 years or until passport expiry, covering multiple trips
  • No VFS or agency fee applies for the short-stay visa-free entry itself
