UK citizens need a visa before travelling to Ghana, applied for via the Ghana High Commission in London or an authorised visa agent such as VFS Global, since arrival without a pre-approved visa is not permitted.

What you need

  • UK passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date, with at least 2 blank pages
  • Completed Ghana visa application form, submitted online or on paper depending on the application route
  • Two recent passport-style photos (35mm x 45mm, white background)
  • Confirmed return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter from a Ghanaian host)
  • Bank statements covering the last 3-6 months as proof of funds
  • Biometrics (fingerprints) collected at the visa application centre or embassy
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for entry

Visa types

  • Tourist visa: single entry, typically valid for up to 90 days, intended for holidays and family visits
  • Business visa: requires an invitation letter from a Ghanaian company, single or multiple entry options
  • Multiple-entry visa: available to frequent business travellers and some tourists, valid up to 12 months with each stay capped at a set period, higher fee
  • Transit visa: for short layovers, shorter validity and lower fee

How to apply

  • Submit your application through VFS Global's Ghana visa application centre in London or directly to the Ghana High Commission, depending on current arrangements
  • Complete the online or paper form, gather supporting documents, and book an appointment to submit biometrics
  • Pay the visa fee and the VFS service fee (if using an agent) by card or as instructed at the centre
  • Standard processing typically takes around 5-10 working days; some applicants may be asked to attend an interview
  • Collect your passport with the visa sticker, or have it couriered back, once the decision is made

Fees & processing time

  • Single-entry tourist/business visa fee: approximately GBP 100-120 depending on current rates
  • Multiple-entry visa fee: higher, often GBP 150-200
  • VFS Global service fee: an additional charge on top of the visa fee, typically GBP 20-40
  • Standard processing time: 5-10 working days; express processing may be available at an extra cost where offered
  • Total practical cost for most UK applicants: roughly GBP 130-250 including service fees

Tips for United Kingdom travelers

  • Apply at least 3-4 weeks before travel to allow for processing time and any requests for extra documents
  • Ensure your invitation letter (if used) includes the host's contact details and purpose of visit, as incomplete letters are a common cause of delay
  • Keep your yellow fever certificate together with your passport, since it is checked on arrival in Accra
  • Use the official VFS Global or Ghana High Commission channels only, avoiding unofficial agents that charge inflated fees
  • Extensions of stay inside Ghana can be arranged through the Ghana Immigration Service before your visa expires
