What you need

  • Passport validity: must be valid for at least 6 months from date of entry; must have at least one blank visa page.
  • Specific forms: Ghana e-visa online application form via ghana.gov.gh; there is no DS-160 or VAF1A for UK applicants.
  • Financial proof: show evidence of funds to cover your stay; bank statements for the last 3 months recommended.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: hotel bookings or invitation letter; return flight itinerary.
  • Photo spec: 2x2 inches (51x51 mm) colour photo with white background, taken within the last 6 months.
  • Biometrics: yes; biometric data is captured as part of the online application and at designated visa application centers or on arrival if applicable.
  • Travel health insurance: not mandatory but recommended; Yellow fever vaccination certificate may be required.
  • Yellow fever vaccination: all travellers aged 9 months and older must present a valid Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate where required; carry certificate.

Application process

  • e-Visa (recommended): How to apply online: go to https://www.ghana.gov.gh/ and follow the online visa application steps; 1) Create an applicant account; 2) Complete the online form with personal and travel details; 3) Upload documents (passport scan, photo, travel itinerary, hotel/invitation letter, Yellow fever certificate if required, bank statements); 4) Pay the visa fee online by card; 5) Submit; 6) You will receive an e-Visa grant notice by email; 7) Print the e-Visa approval letter and carry it to Ghana; on entry present with your passport; biometrics may be captured at entry if not already.
  • Processing time for e-Visa: Standard 3–5 working days; Express 24–48 hours for an additional fee; delivery of approval via email.
  • Visa on arrival (availability varies): Visa on arrival may be issued at Kotoka International Airport (Accra) and other entry points for eligible travellers; Steps: present passport and documents, pay fee in cash (USD or GHS), obtain visa stamp; carry supporting documents (hotel booking or invitation letter, return ticket); avoid long queues by having ready documents; note that this option is less reliable and should not be relied on; verify with official port guidance.
