UK citizens can visit Estonia visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period under Schengen rules, with an ETIAS travel authorisation (around EUR 7) expected to become mandatory from late 2026.

What you need

  • UK passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from the Schengen area, and issued within the last 10 years.
  • Return or onward ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking, rental confirmation, or invitation letter)
  • Proof of sufficient funds - Estonian border guards can ask for evidence of around EUR 100 per day, though this is rarely checked for UK nationals
  • Travel health insurance covering at least EUR 30,000 is strongly recommended but not a legal requirement for visa-exempt UK visitors
  • No biometrics are collected for visa-free entry; your passport is stamped on entry and exit instead
  • No passport photo needed
  • Once ETIAS launches, you will complete a short online form with passport and travel details and pay the authorisation fee before departure

Visa types

  • As a visa-exempt short-stay visitor there is no visa category to choose for tourism or business trips under 90 days.
  • Schengen short-stay exemption: covers tourism, business meetings, and family visits, up to 90 days in any 180-day period, multiple entries allowed
  • Estonian national D-visa: needed only for stays over 90 days, study, or work; single or multiple entry, validity 3-12 months, applied for at the Estonian Embassy in London
  • Long-stay residence permit: required for employment, business relocation, or family reunification lasting beyond a D-visa

Entry conditions

  • UK citizens may stay in Estonia, and the wider Schengen area combined, for up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period without a visa.
  • No paid work is allowed on the visa-free allowance
  • Have your return/onward ticket, accommodation proof, and sufficient funds ready to show at passport control, even though checks are inconsistent
  • Days spent in any other Schengen country count toward the same 90-day limit
  • Extensions beyond 90 days are granted only in exceptional circumstances such as medical emergencies, via the Police and Border Guard Board (PPA)
  • Overstaying can result in an entry ban across the whole Schengen area, typically 1-3 years depending on severity

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee applies for the 90-day visa-free stay.
  • ETIAS, once live, is expected to cost EUR 7 per application (free for applicants under 18 or over 70) with approval typically arriving within minutes, occasionally up to 96 hours if manual review is needed
  • ETIAS authorisation is valid for 3 years or until passport expiry, covering multiple trips
  • No VFS or service-centre fees apply since there is no visa application for short stays

Tips for United Kingdom travelers

  • Check your passport issue and expiry dates well before booking, since Estonian border control strictly applies the 10-year and 3-month rules.
  • Keep a printed or digital copy of your accommodation booking and return ticket in case of spot checks
  • Track your Schengen days using an online 90/180 calculator if you travel frequently to the EU, since overstaying even by a day can trigger an entry ban
  • Register for ETIAS as soon as it opens if travelling after the rollout date, ideally at least 96 hours before your flight
  • Estonia has no UK embassy visa requirement for tourism, so there is no need to use VFS Global or similar agents for short trips
