What you need

  • Passport validity: Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the planned date of departure from the Schengen Area, and it must have been issued within the last 10 years.
  • Forms: No visa application form is required for short stays; there is no ETIAS (as of now) and no biometric submission at a border for visa-free entry.
  • Financial proof: There is no official minimum funds requirement for visa-free entry; border control may request evidence that you have sufficient funds to cover your stay.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: Have proof of accommodation (hotel reservation or address where you will stay) and a return or onward travel ticket.
  • Photo specification: If you are asked for a photo, use a standard EU passport photo: 35x45 mm, white background, neutral expression, taken within the last 12 months.
  • Biometrics: Not required for visa-free entry. Biometrics would be collected only if you apply for a national visa.
  • Travel health insurance: Not legally required for visa-free entry; it is strongly recommended to have travel medical insurance with cover of at least 30,000 EUR for medical emergencies in the Schengen area.

  • Work visa (long-stay for employment): Official name: Estonia long-stay visa (D-visa) for work purposes (purpose-coded 'work'); Validity: up to 12 months; Max stay: up to 12 months; Entry: multiple-entry; Approx fee: 80 EUR.

Application process

  • Entry conditions (visa-free): UK citizens may travel to Estonia visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. There is no pre-travel online visa; entry is decisão at border control. You may be asked to show proof of accommodation, onward/return ticket, and sufficient funds. ETIAS has not yet been implemented.
  • If you plan to stay longer than 90 days: you must leave Estonia and apply for a long-stay visa (D-visa) or a residence permit before or during your stay. Applications for long-stay visas are submitted via the Estonian Embassy in London or through the designated consular service, with biometrics as required.
  • For long-stay: typical steps include gathering documents (passport, invitation or proof of study/work, accommodation in Estonia, proof of funds, health insurance), submitting the application with the required fee, attending a biometric appointment if requested, and awaiting a decision. Processing times vary by consulate but commonly range from 15 to 60 days.

  • Standard processing time: 15–60 days for D-visa applications; some cases may take longer.
  • Express/priority option: May be offered by some embassies at an additional, variable fee; confirm with the Estonian Embassy in London or the chosen consular service.

Tips for United Kingdom travelers

  • How far in advance to apply: For visa-free travel, no pre-application is required. If planning a longer stay (work/study), start the long-stay visa process 3–6 months before travel.
  • Common rejection reasons for UK applicants: insufficient funds or proof of funds; lack of clear purpose or invitation/acceptance documents; inadequate accommodation proof; passport validity issues; incomplete or missing documents.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy: Long-stay visa submissions are typically made through the Estonian Embassy in London or via an approved consular service; confirm current submission method and any service fees.

  • Extension options inside Estonia: Visa-free stays cannot be extended beyond 90 days.
