British citizens can enter the Dominican Republic visa-free for tourism or business for up to 30 days - the former paper Tourist Card has been abolished and entry is now simply visa-exempt, with extensions available locally.

What you need

  • Passport valid for the duration of the stay
  • No visa or tourist card needed for stays up to 30 days (the Tourist Card requirement was scrapped in 2021 for most visa-exempt nationalities, including the UK)
  • Proof of onward/return travel
  • The free online arrival/exit form (E-ticket) completed in advance via the official immigration portal
  • Sufficient funds for the stay
  • Travel insurance is recommended but not mandatory
  • Biometrics: fingerprints and photo taken at immigration on arrival

Visa types

  • Visa-exempt tourist entry - up to 30 days, free of charge, covers leisure and most business visits
  • Business visa - for activities beyond simple meetings (for example direct paid work), applied for at the Dominican Embassy/Consulate in London before travel
  • Residency (temporary/permanent) - separate long-term category applied for inside the country, not relevant for short stays

Entry conditions

  • 30 days permitted on the visa-exempt stamp
  • No local employment allowed
  • Travellers must complete the free online E-ticket (combined immigration/customs form) before arrival
  • Extension beyond 30 days can be requested at the General Directorate of Migration in Santo Domingo, or a small overstay fee is charged on exit for short overstays instead

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee for the standard 30-day entry
  • The online E-ticket is free and takes only a few minutes to complete
  • Overstay beyond 30 days incurs a fee of roughly USD 2.50 per day up to about 4 months, collected on departure
  • A business visa through the embassy, if needed, costs around GBP 50-60 and takes 5-10 working days

Tips for United Kingdom travelers

  • Complete the E-ticket online before flying to avoid delays at immigration
  • If staying close to or beyond 30 days, budget for the small exit overstay fee rather than seeking a formal extension, which is more time-consuming
  • Keep the stamped entry page, as it may be checked against the E-ticket on departure
  • Carry proof of accommodation, as all-inclusive resort bookings are frequently requested at check-in
