British citizens can obtain a visa on arrival at Djibouti-Ambouli International Airport, or apply for Djibouti's e-Visa in advance, for stays of up to one month, with the fee payable in US dollars or euros.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry, with at least one blank visa page
  • A completed arrival visa form (handed out on the plane or at the immigration desk) or the online e-Visa confirmation if applying in advance
  • Proof of onward/return travel
  • Proof of accommodation
  • One passport-style photo (sometimes waived at the airport)
  • Proof of a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if arriving from, or transiting through, a country with yellow fever risk; travel health insurance is recommended

Visa types

  • Visa on arrival / tourist e-Visa - single entry, valid for a stay of up to 1 month, issued at Djibouti-Ambouli Airport or pre-approved online
  • Multiple-entry business visa - for UK business travellers with a sponsoring company, arranged through the Djibouti Embassy or online portal, typically valid 3 months with multiple entries
  • Transit visa - for layovers, issued at the airport for short stops

  • Available at Djibouti-Ambouli International Airport for UK passport holders
  • After landing, travellers queue at the immigration desk, submit the passport and arrival form, and pay the fee in cash (USD or EUR - card payment is unreliable)
  • A visa sticker or stamp valid for up to 30 days is issued on the spot
  • The online e-Visa, where offered, carries the same validity but is pre-approved before travel, speeding up the airport queue
  • Land border crossings have more limited visa-on-arrival availability, so arranging the e-Visa in advance is safer for overland entry

  • Visa-on-arrival fee is approximately USD 50-90 for a single-entry one-month visa (cash only, USD or EUR accepted)
  • The online e-Visa, where available, carries a similar fee plus a small processing charge and is typically approved within 24-72 hours
  • No separate agency fee when applying directly through the official portal

Tips for United Kingdom travelers

  • Carry the exact fee in cash (small USD or EUR notes), as change is not always available at the airport desk
  • Pre-arrange the e-Visa where possible to avoid long queues on arrival, especially on late-night flights
  • Carry proof of yellow fever vaccination if arriving via East Africa, as this is checked on entry
