UK citizens require a visa to visit the Republic of the Congo (Congo-Brazzaville); apply online via the official embassy portal, pay the visa fee in USD, and expect 3–5 working days for processing.

What you need

  • Passport validity: your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned date of entry and have at least 2 blank visa pages.
  • Specific forms: complete the Formulaire de demande de visa (visa application form) available on the official embassy visa portal; this is not the US-style DS-160.
  • Financial proof: bank statements for the last 3 months showing funds equivalent to at least USD 1,000 (or the local currency equivalent) to cover stay.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: confirmed hotel booking or an invitation letter from a Congolese sponsor, plus a return or onward flight ticket.
  • Photo specifications: two recent passport-style photos, 3.5 x 4.5 cm, white background, full-face visible, no hats or sunglasses.
  • Biometrics: biometric data may be collected as part of the visa application; you may need to attend an appointment at the embassy or a designated visa center.
  • Travel health insurance: recommended for all travellers.
  • Yellow fever vaccination: International Certificate of Vaccination against Yellow Fever is required for travellers arriving from certain countries; carry the certificate and be prepared to present it on arrival.
  • Note: all documents should be originals or clear copies as requested on the portal; ensure names match your passport.

Visa types

  • Tourist visa (Visa de Tourisme): Official name Visa de Tourisme. Validity up to 90 days from issue; maximum stay per entry 30 days; single or multiple entry options; approximate fee 60 USD (about 35,000–36,000 XAF).
  • Business visa (Visa d'Affaires): Official name Visa d'Affaires. Validity up to 90 days; maximum stay per entry 30 days; single or multiple entry options; approximate fee 100 USD (about 59,000–60,000 XAF).
  • Student visa (Visa d'Etudes): Official name Visa d'Etudes. Validity equal to the duration of the study program; generally multiple entries, subject to embassy approval; approximate fee 150 USD (about 88,000–90,000 XAF).
  • Work visa (Visa de Travail): Official name Visa de Travail. Validity up to 12 months or contract length; usually single entry; approximate fee 250 USD (about 148,000 XAF).
  • Note: UK citizens should verify whether other long term or official visas are needed for specific study or employment arrangements via the embassy portal; fees and entry conditions are subject to change.

Application process (How to apply online)

  • How to apply online: use the official Congo visa portal linked from the embassy site at https://www.embassyofcongobrazzaville.org/; create an account, fill the visa application form, and upload supporting documents.
  • Steps: 1) create account, 2) complete Formulaire de demande de visa, 3) upload documents (passport data page, photos, Yellow fever certificate, invitation or hotel booking, financial proof, return ticket, travel insurance), 4) pay the visa fee online (USD or XAF), 5) submit and receive an acknowledgment with a reference number, 6) wait for processing, 7) receive the approved e-visa by email or print the sticker visa if issued.
  • Processing time and delivery: standard processing is typically 3–5 working days; express options may be available for an additional fee and can reduce processing to 24–48 hours.
  • Arrival of approval: you will receive the visa grant as an electronic document (e-visa) by email to print and present at border control; if a sticker visa is issued, it will be affixed to your passport at the embassy and sent to you as instructed by the embassy.
  • Important note: there is currently no visa-on-arrival facility for UK citizens; all travellers must obtain a visa prior to travel through the official portal or Congo embassy.

  • Work visa: around 250 USD; about 148,000 XAF. Processing: 7–10 working days. Express option may be available at extra cost.
  • VFS/BLS service fees: not applicable for Congo visa applications processed via the official embassy portal; always verify on the portal if third-party centers are involved in the UK.
  • Total cost estimate: depends on visa type; examples above show base visa fees; add any express/priority fees if selected.
  • Currency note: payment is accepted in USD or XAF depending on the portal options; exchange rates vary daily.

Tips for United Kingdom travelers

  • Apply well in advance: aim to submit 6 weeks or more before travel to account for processing and potential document requests.
  • Common rejection factors for UK applicants: passport validity shorter than 6 months, missing or mismatching names on documents, missing Yellow fever certificate, insufficient evidence of funds, incomplete or inconsistent information in the application, or lack of hotel/invitation proof.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy: Congo visa processing is handled through the official embassy channels; there may be no separate VFS/BLS service for UK applicants—use the embassy portal and contact the Congo Embassy in London if needed.
