What you need

  • Passport validity: passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry and have at least 2 blank visa pages.
  • Specific forms: no DS-160 or similar paper forms; complete the Chad online e-visa application via the official portal at https://www.ambassade-tchad.org/.
  • Financial proof: provide bank statements for the last 3 months showing funds; recommended minimum equivalent to USD 1,000 to cover the stay.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: proof of accommodation for the entire stay (hotel booking or invitation letter from a host) and a return/onward flight ticket.
  • Photo specification: one recent passport photo in JPEG format, size 35x45 mm, white background, head centered, no glasses if possible.
  • Biometrics: yes; biometric data (photo and fingerprints) are captured as part of the online application process, with any in-person submission required by the Chad embassy if requested.
  • Travel health insurance: recommended; not mandatory. Ensure coverage for medical expenses and emergency evacuation.
  • Vaccinations: Yellow fever vaccination certificate is recommended or may be requested if traveling from certain areas; check current guidance before travel.

  • Transit e-visa: Official name Visa de transit (e-visa); Validity 7 days; max stay 7 days; single-entry; approximate fee USD 25; local currency approx XAF 16,250.
  • Student e-visa: Official name Visa d'études (e-visa); Validity 180 days; max stay 90 days; single-entry; approximate fee USD 100; local currency approx XAF 65,000.
  • Work e-visa: Official name Visa de travail (e-visa); Validity 180 days; max stay 90 days; single-entry; approximate fee USD 150; local currency approx XAF 97,500.

Application process

  • How to apply online: go to the official Chad portal at https://www.ambassade-tchad.org/ and create an account or log in.
  • Steps: select e-visa, choose visa type, complete the online application form with personal and travel details, upload required documents (passport bio page, passport photo, travel itinerary or invitation letter, hotel booking or host invitation, return/onward ticket, proof of funds), and upload any vaccination documents if requested.
  • Payment: pay the visa fee using a supported card (USD and local currency shown on the portal; fees may be displayed in USD with local currency equivalents shown as XAF). A separate portal processing fee (about USD 15) may apply.
  • Processing time: standard processing is 3–5 working days. An express option (24–48 hours) may be available for an additional fee (about USD 20).
  • How approval arrives: once approved, your e-visa is issued as a PDF and emailed to the applicant; print the e-visa and present it with your passport on arrival in Chad.

  • Student e-visa: visa fee USD 100; local currency roughly XAF 65,000; portal processing fee USD 15; total about USD 115; total roughly XAF 74,750.
  • Work e-visa: visa fee USD 150; local currency roughly XAF 97,500; portal processing fee USD 15; total about USD 165; total roughly XAF 107,250.
  • Note: VFS/BLS service fees do not apply to online Chad e-visas. Local currency equivalents are estimates based on a rough rate of 1 USD ≈ 650 XAF and may vary at the time of payment.
  • Standard processing time: 3–5 working days. Express/priority option: available for some visa types with an additional fee (approximately USD 20) for 24–48 hour processing.

Tips for United Kingdom travelers

  • Apply well in advance: aim to submit your application at least 2–3 weeks before your planned travel date to account for processing and possible document checks.
  • Common rejection reasons for UK applicants: incomplete or inconsistent information, missing or outdated documents, insufficient funds evidence, mismatch between travel purpose and documents such as invitation letters or hotel bookings, passport validity issues.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy application: for Chad e-visas you apply online through the official Chad portal; there is typically no VFS/BLS handling for the e-visa itself; if you later require a different visa type or a sticker visa, consult the Chad embassy for guidance.
  • Travel advisories: check the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office travel advice for Chad before departure; regions near border areas (certain border zones) carry higher security risks; follow local advice and keep emergency contact details handy.
