What you need

  • Passport validity: Must be valid for at least 6 months from date of entry, with at least two blank visa pages.
  • Specific forms: Online visa application on gov.br; no DS-160 or VAF1A; complete the Formulario de Visto Eletrônico on the gov.br portal and print the confirmation QR code.
  • Financial proof: Bank statements or a bank letter showing access to funds equivalent to BRL 100 per day of stay (e.g., BRL 3,000 for a 30-day trip).
  • Accommodation and return ticket: Evidence of hotel bookings or host accommodation and a return or onward travel ticket.
  • Photo spec: Recent color passport photo, 3.5 x 4.5 cm with white background.
  • Biometrics: Yes; biometric data collected as part of the online application and/or at a Brazilian Visa Application Center (VAC) in the UK during appointment.
  • Travel health insurance: Strongly recommended; coverage for medical emergencies with minimum USD 30,000.

  • Visto de Negócios (Business Visa): Official name Visto de Negócios; Validity up to 2 years; maximum stay per visit 90 days; multiple entries; approximate fee USD 60 (BRL ~315).
  • Visto de Estudo (Student Visa): Official name Visto de Estudo; Validity for duration of course (up to 2 years with possible extension); multiple entries; approximate fee USD 60.
  • Visto de Trabalho (Work Visa): Official name Visto de Trabalho; Validity up to 2 years (often tied to contract); multiple entries; approximate fee USD 110.
  • Visto de Residência Temporária (Temporary Residence Visa): Official name Visto de Residência Temporária; Validity up to 2 years; multiple entries; approximate fee USD 140.

Application process

  • How to apply online: Use the official portal https://www.gov.br/pt-br/servicos/obter-visto-para-viajar-o-brasil
  • Step 1: Create or log in to a gov.br account.
  • Step 2: Complete the Electronic Visa form (Visto Eletrônico) with personal details, travel plan, and passport information.
  • Step 3: Upload required documents: scanned passport bio page, a recent photo, proof of funds, accommodation, and return/onward travel documents as applicable.
  • Step 4: Pay the visa fee with a credit/debit card; fees appear in USD and BRL on the portal.
  • Step 5: Wait for e-Visa processing (typical 5–9 business days). You will receive visa authorization by email; print it and carry.
  • Step 6: On arrival, present the e-Visa authorisation printout and your passport.

  • Visa fee (approximate): Tourist USD 40 (BRL ~210); Business USD 60 (BRL ~315); Student USD 60; Work USD 110; Temporary Residence USD 140.
  • VAC/consular service fees: Online e-Visa generally has no separate VAC fee; if applying via a consulate for a non-online path, separate processing charges apply; check the embassy site.

  • Standard processing time: 5–9 business days; allow up to 15 days in peak periods.

Tips for United Kingdom travelers

  • Apply well in advance: at least 3–4 weeks before travel; allow extra time during holidays or peak periods.
  • Common rejection reasons for UK applicants: incomplete online form or missing documents, passport validity issues, insufficient funds or inconsistent travel plans, lack of accommodation proof, or data/document mismatch.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy application: For Brazil, most applicants use the online e-Visa route; traditional consulate paths exist for non-online routes; follow the official gov.br process.
