What you need

  • No biometrics required for visa-free entry currently (this changes once the EU Entry/Exit System launches)
  • Travel health insurance: not mandatory for UK citizens but strongly recommended, since Brexit ended automatic EHIC-equivalent reciprocal cover; a GHIC card covers emergency state healthcare

Tips for United Kingdom travelers

  • Carry proof of return travel and accommodation; Austrian border police do occasionally check this for UK nationals since Brexit
  • Track your Schengen days carefully if visiting multiple EU countries - the 90/180 rule is cumulative across all Schengen states, not per country
  • Get a GHIC card or private travel insurance before travelling - UK nationals no longer have automatic EHIC-equivalent reciprocal cover
  • Visa-free entry does not cover paid work beyond occasional business meetings - apply for the correct national visa for longer assignments
  • Register for ETIAS as soon as it becomes mandatory, ideally a few days before departure in case of manual review
