Zambia Visa for South Africa Citizens 2026

Visa Free

As a fellow SADC member state, South African citizens can enter Zambia visa-free for tourism and business visits of up to 90 days using only a valid passport.

Guide last updated October 23, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry
  • No visa required for SADC nationals, including South Africans, for stays up to 90 days
  • Proof of onward/return ticket may be requested
  • Proof of accommodation or sufficient funds may be requested
  • Biometrics: standard entry stamp at the port of entry
  • Travel health insurance: recommended; yellow fever vaccination certificate may be requested if arriving from or having transited a yellow fever risk country

Visa types

  • No visa required for SADC citizens for tourism or business visits up to 90 days per year - free entry permit stamped on arrival
  • Zambia also operates an e-visa (evisa.zambiaimmigration.gov.zm) and visa-on-arrival system for non-SADC nationalities, but these are not needed by South African passport holders
  • Work/residence permit: required for anyone taking up employment or long-term residence, applied for separately through the Department of Immigration

Entry conditions

  • Permitted stay: up to 90 days in a calendar year for SADC nationals
  • Work restrictions: no paid employment permitted on the visa-free entry
  • What to show on arrival: valid passport; yellow fever certificate if arriving from an at-risk country
  • Extension options: extensions beyond 90 days can be requested at the Department of Immigration in Lusaka before the permit expires

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee for the SADC visa-free entry
  • No VFS/BLS service required
  • Total cost estimate: USD 0 for a standard visit
  • Processing time: immediate on arrival at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (Lusaka), Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport (Livingstone), or land borders

Tips for South Africa travelers

  • Carry your yellow fever certificate if you have recently transited through a yellow fever endemic country, even though you're exempt from Zambia's visa requirement
  • Confirm current entry rules before travel, as Zambia periodically updates visa-on-arrival fees for non-SADC visitors which can cause confusion at the border
  • If combining Zambia and Zimbabwe (e.g. Victoria Falls), note the separate KAZA Univisa is for non-SADC nationals and is not needed by South Africans, who enter both countries visa-free
  • There is a Zambian High Commission in Pretoria for general consular enquiries, though it is not needed for standard tourist entry
  • Track your cumulative days in Zambia if you cross the border multiple times within a year to stay within the 90-day SADC allowance
