  • Short-Stay Visa (Type C), Single-entry: one entry, up to 90 days within a 180-day period

  • Book an appointment online via the VFS Global website
  • Submit your application in person with the complete document checklist 15 working days to 6 months before travel
  • Pay the visa fee and VFS service fee at submission
  • Attend the biometrics appointment where required
  • Track your application status online through Migrationsverket's system and collect your passport once a decision is made

Fees & processing time

  • Schengen visa fee: €90 (approx. R1,800) for adults; €45 for children aged 6–12; free under 6
  • VFS Global service fee: typically around R350–R450
  • Total estimated cost: approximately R2,200–R2,500 including service fees
  • Standard processing time: 15 calendar days from a complete application, extendable up to 30–45 days in individual cases

Tips for South Africa travelers

  • Apply at least 4–6 weeks before travel to secure a VFS appointment and allow for processing
  • Common rejection reasons: insufficient proof of funds, weak ties to South Africa, unclear travel purpose, or inadequate insurance coverage
  • Use VFS Global directly rather than unofficial third-party agents to avoid extra costs and errors
  • Check current travel advisories affecting South African passport holders in Sweden and the wider Schengen area
  • To extend a stay in Sweden, apply to Migrationsverket before your visa expires — extensions are only granted for exceptional circumstances
