Visa types

  • Airport Transit Visa (Type A): for transiting through a Schengen airport without entering the country
  • Short-Stay Visa (Type C), Single-entry: valid for one entry, up to 90 days within a 180-day period
  • Short-Stay Visa (Type C), Multiple-entry: issued to frequent travelers with a good travel history, validity from 1 to 5 years, each stay capped at 90 days per 180-day period
  • National Visa (Type D): for study, work, or long-term stays exceeding 90 days, applied for separately

How to apply

  • Slovak visa applications from South Africa are processed by the Slovak Embassy or its authorized visa application centre; check the current representation for South Africa before applying, as Slovakia may be represented by a neighboring Schengen mission
  • Book an appointment and submit your application in person 15 working days to 6 months before travel
  • Complete document checklist: application form, photo, passport, insurance, itinerary, financial proof, accommodation proof
  • Pay the visa fee at the time of submission (cash or card, depending on the centre)
  • Attend the biometrics appointment if required
  • Track your application status online and collect your passport once a decision is made, or opt for courier return where available

Fees & processing time

  • Schengen visa fee: €90 (approx. R1,800) for adults; €45 for children aged 6–12; free for children under 6
  • Visa application centre service fee (if applicable): typically an additional R350–R450
  • Total estimated cost: roughly R2,200–R2,500 including service fees
  • Standard processing time: 15 calendar days from a complete application, extendable up to 30–45 days in individual cases or if additional documents are requested
  • No official express/priority option for Schengen visas — apply well ahead of your travel date

Tips for South Africa travelers

  • Apply at least 4–6 weeks before your travel date to allow for appointment availability and processing
  • Common rejection reasons: insufficient proof of funds, weak ties to South Africa, unclear travel purpose, or incomplete insurance coverage
  • Book through the official visa application centre rather than third-party agents to avoid extra fees and delays
  • Check for any current travel advisories affecting South African passport holders in Slovakia or the wider Schengen area
  • If you need to extend your stay while in Slovakia, apply to the Slovak Foreign Police Office before your visa expires — extensions are only granted for exceptional reasons
