As an African Union passport holder, South African citizens can enter Rwanda visa-free for tourism or business for up to 30 days, granted automatically at the port of entry.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
  • No advance visa or form required — Rwanda grants automatic visa-free entry to all African Union passport holders
  • Proof of accommodation or itinerary is helpful if queried
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate if arriving from a country where yellow fever is endemic
  • No biometrics beyond the standard immigration photo
  • Travel insurance is recommended but not required

Visa types

  • Not applicable for the standard 30-day visa-free entry
  • Longer stays, work, or study require a separate permit applied for through Irembo (Rwanda's government services portal) or the Directorate General of Immigration
  • East African Tourist Visa: a separate multi-entry visa covering Rwanda, Kenya, and Uganda, useful for regional itineraries

Entry conditions

  • 30 days of free entry on arrival, renewable
  • Extension to 90 days can be requested online via Irembo before the initial 30 days expire
  • No paid employment permitted on the visa-free entry
  • Must carry proof of accommodation and onward plans in case requested by immigration

  • 30-day extension via Irembo involves a minimal administrative fee, processed within a few business days
  • The alternative East African Tourist Visa costs US$100, is multi-entry, and is issued within a few days online

  • Carry proof of yellow fever vaccination if you have transited through an at-risk country beforehand
  • Kigali International Airport immigration is efficient — have your accommodation address ready to speed things up
