Guide last updated October 22, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry
  • Completed application on the Royal Oman Police eVisa portal (evisa.rop.gov.om)
  • Digital copy of your passport bio page uploaded during the online application
  • Confirmed return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking) for the duration of your stay
  • Passport-size digital photo uploaded as part of the application
  • Biometrics are not required in advance; fingerprints may be captured on arrival at the airport
  • Travel health insurance is recommended, not mandatory for short tourist visits

Visa types

  • Tourist visa (single entry): valid for 30 days, extendable once for another 30 days, fee OMR 20
  • Tourist visa (multiple entry, unmarried couples/families not required): available for frequent visitors, fee OMR 50, valid 1 year with each stay up to 30 days
  • Express visa processed through select airlines and hotels for travelers transiting or staying briefly
  • GCC residents of certain nationalities (not applicable to South Africans) have a simplified sponsored-visa route

Visa on arrival

  • Apply in advance online via the Royal Oman Police eVisa portal, or complete the process at the visa counter at Muscat International Airport and other entry points
  • Present your passport, printed e-visa approval (if applied online) or complete the arrival application, pay the fee, and proceed through immigration
  • Fee can be paid online by card during the e-visa application, or in local currency (Omani Rial) or major cards at the airport counter
  • Processing at the airport counter is typically fast, often under 30 minutes outside of peak arrival times
  • Keep a printed copy of your e-visa approval email as a backup in case of system issues on arrival

Fees & processing time

  • Single-entry tourist visa fee: OMR 20 (~R1,000)
  • Multiple-entry tourist visa fee: OMR 50 (~R2,500)
  • Standard online processing time: 2-5 working days for e-visa approval before travel
  • On-arrival processing: typically same-day, within the time it takes to clear the immigration counter
  • No separate express fee category; online application ahead of travel is itself the faster, recommended route

Tips for South Africa travelers

  • Apply for the e-visa online at least a week before travel to avoid queues at the arrival visa counter
  • Common rejection or delay reasons: blurry passport scan, mismatched flight details, incomplete hotel booking information
  • Oman's dress code and customs are conservative; review cultural guidance before travel, particularly for women
  • Extensions of the 30-day single-entry visa can be arranged at a Royal Oman Police office before expiry, for an additional fee
  • Check validity requirements carefully if connecting onward to other GCC countries, as some require separate visas
