Mexico Visa for South Africa Citizens 2026

Visa Required

South African citizens generally need a sticker visa for Mexico unless they hold a valid US, Schengen, UK, or Japanese visa or residency (which qualifies for an electronic visa waiver); standard visa fee approx. USD 44, processing about 10 business days.

Guide last updated September 18, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date, with at least 1 blank page
  • Completed Mexican visa application form submitted online in advance
  • If eligible for the visa waiver: a valid visa or residence permit from the US, Canada, Schengen area, UK, or Japan, printed and presented at the consulate or airline check-in
  • Proof of accommodation and a return or onward flight ticket
  • Bank statements for the last 3 months showing sufficient funds
  • Passport photo, 2.5x3cm, white background, taken within the last 6 months
  • Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) captured in person at the Mexican consulate
  • Travel health insurance is recommended though not mandatory

Visa types

  • Tourist visa (Visitante sin permiso para realizar actividades remuneradas): single or multiple entry, validity up to 180 days per entry, approx. USD 44
  • Business visa: similar validity, requires an invitation letter from a Mexican company, approx. USD 44
  • Electronic visa waiver: available to South Africans holding a valid US, Schengen, UK, Canadian, or Japanese visa/residency, applied for online, no consulate visit needed

How to apply

  • If you do not qualify for the electronic visa waiver, book an appointment with the Mexican Embassy in Pretoria (Mexico is generally represented directly, not via VFS, in South Africa)
  • Complete the online application form and pay the consular fee
  • Attend the appointment with your passport, photo, funds proof, accommodation booking and invitation letter if applicable, and provide biometrics
  • Processing typically takes about 10 business days from a complete submission
  • If eligible for the waiver route, apply online at least 4 working days before travel and print the approval to show at check-in and on arrival

Fees & processing time

  • Tourist/business visa fee: approx. USD 44 (roughly ZAR 850)
  • Electronic visa waiver fee: no consular fee, only the cost of the visa/residency you already hold that qualifies you
  • Total cost estimate: ZAR 850-1,000 for the sticker visa route
  • Standard processing time: about 10 working days for the sticker visa; a few working days for the electronic waiver
  • No official express service at the embassy; apply early to avoid delays

Tips for South Africa travelers

  • Check first whether you qualify for the electronic visa waiver via an existing US, Schengen, UK, Canadian, or Japanese visa - this is far faster and cheaper than the full sticker visa
  • The most common rejection reason for South African applicants is insufficient proof of funds or an unclear travel purpose - keep 3 months of bank statements ready
  • Since there is no VFS/BLS centre for Mexico in South Africa, apply directly with the Mexican Embassy in Pretoria and book early as appointment slots can be limited
  • Check DIRCO's travel advisory and Mexico's National Migration Institute (INM) website for the latest requirements before applying
  • Extensions beyond your authorised stay are handled by the INM inside Mexico and should be requested before your permitted stay expires
