Guide last updated October 22, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond arrival, with at least 2 blank pages
  • Completed Malian visa application form
  • Two recent passport-size photos
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter from a host in Mali)
  • Return or onward flight ticket
  • Bank statement showing sufficient funds
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate (mandatory for entry)
  • Letter of invitation for business travel, where applicable
  • Biometrics captured at the embassy/consulate when lodging the application

Visa types

  • Tourist visa: single entry, typically valid for a stay of up to 30 days
  • Business visa: requires an invitation letter, similar validity, can be issued as multiple entry for frequent business travellers
  • Transit visa: for short stopovers
  • Multiple-entry visa: available on request for business or NGO travellers, valid 3-12 months depending on approval

How to apply

  • Mali has no embassy in South Africa, so applications are typically routed through a Malian embassy in a neighbouring country or in Europe (e.g. Paris), or through an authorised visa agent
  • Submit the completed form and supporting documents by courier or in person at the chosen mission
  • Pay the visa fee at submission
  • Processing typically takes 5-7 working days once all documents are complete
  • Collect the visa in person or have the passport returned by courier

Fees & processing time

  • Single-entry tourist visa fee: approximately USD 50-70
  • Multiple-entry business visa fee: approximately USD 80-100
  • Standard processing time: 5-7 working days
  • Express processing is not consistently available given the limited consular network
  • Extensions inside Mali are arranged through the Direction Générale de la Police in Bamako

Tips for South Africa travelers

  • Apply at least 3-4 weeks ahead to allow for courier transit time to and from the nearest Malian mission
  • Common rejection or delay reasons: missing yellow fever certificate, unclear purpose of travel, insufficient proof of accommodation
  • Check South African government travel advisories carefully before booking, given ongoing security concerns in parts of Mali
  • Confirm which embassy currently processes South African applications, as representation arrangements can change
  • Extensions should be requested at the Direction Générale de la Police in Bamako well before the visa's original expiry date
