Guide last updated October 22, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date
  • Return or onward ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or host address)
  • Proof of sufficient funds for your stay
  • Valid yellow fever vaccination certificate - mandatory, South Africa is on Ghana's yellow fever list
  • Passport photo not required for entry itself
  • No biometrics required for the 90-day visa waiver
  • Travel health insurance recommended but not mandatory

Visa types

  • No visa is needed for stays of 90 days or less under the visa waiver for South African citizens. For stays beyond 90 days, work or study, apply in advance for the relevant category at a Ghanaian mission:
  • Business visa: single/multiple entry, fee approx $50-100, processing 5-10 working days
  • Work/Residence permit: requires a local sponsor, processed through Ghana Immigration Service, 2-4 weeks

Entry conditions

  • Up to 90 days per visit, multiple entries permitted
  • No paid work allowed under the visa-free entry
  • Must present return ticket, accommodation details and yellow fever certificate at immigration
  • Extensions are possible at the Ghana Immigration Service head office in Accra before the 90 days lapse
  • Extension fee approximately GHS 500-700 (around $35-50), processed in a few working days

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee for the 90-day waiver itself
  • If applying for a Business or Work visa instead: fee $50-150 depending on category
  • Standard processing 5-10 working days through the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria
  • No formal express service currently offered for South African applicants

Tips for South African travelers

  • Carry your yellow fever certificate at all times - entry can be refused without it, this is strictly checked on arrival
  • Book and carry proof of accommodation, as immigration officers may request it
  • Keep a printed copy of your return ticket, not just a digital one
  • If you plan to stay longer than 90 days, start the extension process at least 2 weeks before your visa-free period expires
  • No current blanket DIRCO travel advisory against visiting Ghana
