  • Completed Schengen visa application form
  • Two recent passport photos (35x45mm, white background)
  • Travel/medical insurance covering at least EUR 30,000 for the whole Schengen area
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation)
  • Return flight itinerary
  • Proof of sufficient funds (bank statements for the last 3 months)
  • Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) captured at the visa application centre

Visa types

  • Short-stay Schengen visa (Type C): single, double or multiple entry, valid for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period; fee around EUR 90
  • Airport transit visa: for travellers transiting through an international zone without entering Estonia proper
  • National long-stay visa (Type D) or residence permit: required for study, work or stays over 90 days, applied for separately

How to apply

  • Book an appointment at the VFS Global or designated Schengen visa application centre in South Africa handling Estonian visas
  • Submit the completed form with all supporting documents and biometrics in person
  • Pay the visa fee plus the VFS service fee
  • An interview is not usually required but may be requested
  • Standard processing takes up to 15 working days, extendable to 30-60 days in complex cases

Fees & processing time

  • Schengen visa fee: EUR 90 (adults); reduced for children aged 6-11
  • VFS/BLS service fee: approximately ZAR 450-600 in addition to the visa fee
  • Total estimated cost: roughly EUR 90 plus local service fee
  • Standard processing: up to 15 working days
  • Priority/express processing is not generally offered for this route

Tips for South African travelers

  • Apply at least 3-4 weeks before your trip to allow for processing delays
  • Common rejection reasons: insufficient proof of funds, weak travel history, unclear purpose of visit, inadequate insurance cover
  • If Estonia is not your main destination within the Schengen area, apply at the embassy/VFS centre of the country where you will spend the most time or first enter
  • Book your VFS appointment early, as slots fill up during peak holiday seasons
  • Extensions within the Schengen area are rarely granted — plan your full itinerary before applying
