Canada Visa for South Africa Citizens 2026

Visa Required

South African citizens need a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) in advance to enter Canada, as South Africa is not on Canada's visa-exempt list.

Guide last updated October 21, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for the duration of your intended stay
  • Completed online application through the IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) portal
  • Digital photo meeting Canadian visa photo specifications
  • Proof of sufficient funds (bank statements for the last 6 months)
  • Proof of ties to South Africa (employment letter, property, family ties) to demonstrate intent to return
  • Travel history and any previous visa refusals disclosed in the application
  • Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) collected at a Visa Application Centre (VAC), valid for 10 years if already on file
  • Travel health insurance recommended, not mandatory for tourist visas

Visa types

  • Single-entry TRV: for one visit, typically up to 6 months
  • Multiple-entry TRV: allows repeated visits over its validity period (often up to 10 years or until passport expiry), commonly issued to applicants with strong travel history
  • Super Visa: for parents/grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents, allowing stays of up to 5 years at a time
  • Study and work permits are separate application streams with their own requirements

How to apply

  • Create an account on the IRCC website and complete the online TRV application
  • Upload all required documents, including financial and employment evidence
  • Pay the application fee online
  • Book a biometrics appointment at the Visa Application Centre (VFS Global, operating on behalf of IRCC) in Pretoria or another designated city
  • Attend the biometrics appointment; await processing, which is tracked through your online account
  • The visa is issued as a sticker in the passport, couriered back via the VAC

Fees & processing time

  • TRV application fee: CAD 100 per person (approximately USD 70-75)
  • Biometrics fee: CAD 85 (approximately USD 60)
  • VAC service fee: additional charge, typically CAD/ZAR equivalent of USD 40-50
  • Standard processing time: varies, commonly 2-8 weeks depending on application volume, but can take longer
  • No guaranteed expedited service for standard TRVs; apply well in advance of travel dates

Tips for South Africa travelers

  • Apply at least 2-3 months before your intended travel date given variable processing times
  • Common rejection reasons include insufficient proof of funds, weak ties to South Africa, or incomplete/inconsistent documentation
  • Ensure your application is fully complete before submission, as missing documents can lead to delays or refusal rather than requests for more information
  • The South African High Commission in Ottawa and consulates in other cities can assist with documentation needs before applying
  • Keep copies of your entire application and any communication from IRCC in case of appeal or reapplication
