Bulgaria Visa for South Africa Citizens 2026

Visa Required

South African citizens need a Schengen-area short-stay visa in advance to enter Bulgaria, applied for through a Bulgarian embassy, consulate, or visa application center.

Guide last updated October 21, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended departure date from the Schengen/Bulgarian area, issued within the last 10 years, with at least 2 blank pages
  • Completed and signed Schengen-style visa application form
  • Two recent passport photos (35x45mm, biometric standard)
  • Travel medical insurance valid for Bulgaria (and the wider area where applicable) with minimum EUR 30,000 coverage
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel bookings or invitation letter)
  • Confirmed round-trip flight itinerary
  • Proof of sufficient funds (bank statements for the last 3 months, payslips)
  • Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) collected in person at the visa application center, valid for 5 years if already on file

Visa types

  • Type C (short-stay) visa: single, double, or multiple entry, valid for stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period, for tourism, business, or family visits
  • Type D (national long-stay) visa: for work, study, or family reunification exceeding 90 days, requires a local sponsor or institutional documentation
  • Airport transit visa: only required in specific circumstances for certain nationalities

How to apply

  • Submit the application at the Bulgarian embassy in Pretoria or an authorized visa application center (e.g., VFS Global, where available) serving South Africa
  • Book an appointment in advance, as slots can be limited
  • Attend in person to submit documents and biometrics
  • Pay the visa fee at the time of application
  • Track the application status via the visa center's reference number; collect the passport once the visa is issued

Fees & processing time

  • Standard Schengen-type short-stay visa fee: approximately EUR 90 (around USD 95-100)
  • Visa application center service fee (if applicable): typically an additional EUR 20-30
  • Standard processing time: 10-15 calendar days from a complete application and biometrics appointment
  • Expedited processing (where offered) can reduce this to around 3-5 working days for an additional fee

Tips for South Africa travelers

  • Book your visa appointment at least 4-6 weeks before travel, especially during peak summer and December holiday seasons
  • Common rejection reasons include insufficient proof of funds, unclear or inconsistent travel itinerary, and incomplete insurance documentation
  • Since Bulgaria is now applying the Schengen rules at its external borders, your visa and entry stamps will be checked against the 90/180-day rule if you also visit other Schengen countries
  • Keep digital and printed copies of all documents submitted, as immigration at the port of entry may request them again
  • The South African Embassy in Sofia (or nearest accredited mission) can assist with emergencies during your stay
