Bhutan Visa for South Africa Citizens 2026

e-Visa / eTA

South African citizens need an online pre-approved visa plus a mandatory licensed tour arrangement and Sustainable Development Fee to visit Bhutan.

Guide last updated October 21, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry
  • A confirmed booking with a Bhutanese licensed tour operator or hotel (independent travel without a local operator is not permitted for most visitors)
  • Passport-style photo (digital upload, white background)
  • Proof of payment of the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)
  • Travel health insurance covering Bhutan is strongly recommended
  • No biometrics collected in advance; fingerprints/photo may be taken on arrival at Paro airport or land borders
  • Full travel itinerary submitted through the operator

Visa types

  • Tourist e-visa: single entry, validity tied to your approved travel dates, arranged via the Department of Tourism's online Bhutan e-visa system or your tour operator
  • Business visa: for commercial visits, requires an invitation from a Bhutanese company, processed similarly online
  • Visas are not issued at a Bhutanese embassy counter for most nationalities; everything routes through the online portal

How to apply online

  • Apply via the Department of Immigration's online visa portal (immigration.gov.bt) or have your licensed tour operator submit the application on your behalf
  • Submit passport bio page scan, photo, and travel dates
  • Pay the visa fee and Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) online in advance
  • Approval letter (visa clearance) is issued by email, typically within 5-7 working days
  • Present the printed approval letter plus passport at Paro International Airport or a land border (Phuentsholing) for visa stamping on arrival

Fees & processing time

  • Visa processing fee: approximately USD 40
  • Sustainable Development Fee (SDF): USD 100 per person per night (as of current policy; reduced rates may apply for children and extended-stay discounts for longer trips)
  • Total cost estimate for a 5-night trip: roughly USD 540 in government fees alone, excluding tour package, flights, and accommodation
  • Standard processing time: 5-7 working days once documents and payment are submitted
  • No separate express service; delays are rare if documents are complete

Tips for South Africa travelers

  • Book through a reputable, licensed Bhutanese tour operator early, as they handle most of the visa paperwork for you
  • Apply and pay the SDF at least 2-3 weeks before travel to avoid last-minute issues
  • There is no South African embassy in Bhutan; the nearest South African diplomatic representation covering the region is in New Delhi, India
  • Flights to Bhutan are limited (via Drukair or Bhutan Airlines, typically routed through India, Nepal, Thailand, or Singapore), so book connecting flights with buffer time
  • Common rejection reasons include incomplete tour operator bookings or mismatched passport details between the application and actual passport
