Visa Free

South African citizens can enter Belize visa-free for stays of up to 30 days, extendable in-country, as Commonwealth nationals - no advance visa application is required.

Guide last updated October 21, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for the duration of the stay
  • Return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or host address)
  • Proof of sufficient funds to cover the stay
  • Completed immigration/customs arrival form (provided on the flight or at the border)
  • No visa, biometrics, or embassy appointment required

Visa types

  • No visa category applies - South Africans receive a visitor's entry stamp on arrival, generally valid for up to 30 days
  • Work, study, or residency require a separate permit applied for through the Belize Immigration and Nationality Department

Entry conditions

  • Maximum initial stay: 30 days, extendable in-country at an Immigration Department office, generally up to a total of 6 months with monthly extensions
  • Paid employment is not permitted on a visitor stamp
  • A return or onward ticket is generally checked at check-in and on arrival
  • Extension fees apply per month and must be paid before the current stamp expires

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee and no processing time for the initial visa-free entry
  • Monthly in-country extension fee: typically around USD 25-50 per month, payable at an Immigration office
  • A departure tax usually applies, often included in the airline ticket price

Tips for South African travelers

  • There are no direct flights from South Africa to Belize - most routes connect via the US, UK or Mexico, so check connecting-country transit requirements
  • If you plan to stay longer than 30 days, visit an Immigration office in Belize well before your stamp expires to extend, since overstaying incurs daily fines
  • Keep both your entry stamp and any extension stamps together in your passport, as these are checked on departure
  • Travel insurance is strongly recommended given limited specialist medical facilities outside Belize City
