Visa Free

South African citizens can enter Argentina visa-free for tourism or business for up to 90 days under the countries' visa waiver arrangement.

Guide last updated October 21, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for the duration of the stay
  • Return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation
  • Proof of sufficient funds (credit card or bank statement, occasionally requested)
  • No visa application, form, or biometrics needed before travel

Visa types

  • No visa required for tourism or business visits of up to 90 days
  • Work, study, or long-term stays require a residency or work visa applied for in advance through the Argentine Embassy in Pretoria

Entry conditions

  • Maximum stay: 90 days per visit, stamped in the passport on arrival
  • A single 90-day extension can be requested in person at Migraciones (the National Directorate of Migration) offices inside Argentina, for a fee
  • Paid employment is not permitted on the visa-free entry stamp
  • Passport and onward ticket are checked at immigration; return tickets to South Africa or a third country are usually sufficient

Fees & processing time

  • No fee or processing time for the initial 90-day visa-free entry
  • In-country 90-day extension fee: approximately ARS equivalent of USD 25-40, processed same-day or within a few days at a Migraciones office
  • No VFS or embassy visit needed unless applying for a different visa category

Tips for South African travelers

  • Direct flights from South Africa to Argentina are limited; most routes connect via Brazil, Europe, or the Middle East - compare total travel time, not just price
  • Keep a copy of your passport and entry stamp separately from the original while travelling, as petty theft of documents is a known issue in major cities
  • If you plan to stay beyond 90 days, start the extension process at Migraciones before your stamped period expires to avoid overstay fines
  • ATMs in Argentina sometimes have low withdrawal limits and poor exchange rates - consider using cash exchanges ("cuevas") or cards with good international rates
