What you need

  • Passport valid for the intended duration of stay (no minimum 6-month rule for UK entry)

Visa types

  • UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) — for visits, transit and short business trips; multiple entry; valid 2 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first; each visit capped at up to 6 months; fee GBP 16
  • Standard Visitor visa — only needed if wanting to stay longer than 6 months or for permitted paid engagements beyond visitor rules; sticker/vignette visa, fee from GBP 115 for 6 months

How to apply online

  • Apply via the UK ETA mobile app (fastest) or at gov.uk/eta
  • Steps: create a UKVI account, scan passport chip via app or upload passport photo page, take a live facial photo, answer eligibility questions, pay GBP 16 by card
  • Most applications are decided within minutes; some take up to 3 working days if extra checks are needed
  • Approval is linked electronically to your passport number — no physical stamp or sticker; you'll get an email/app confirmation
  • Apply at least 3 working days before travel, ideally as soon as you book

Tips for Singapore travelers

  • Apply as soon as you have booked flights, even weeks in advance — approval rarely takes long but avoids last-minute issues
  • Common rejection reasons: passport details entered incorrectly, unresolved past UK immigration issues, incomplete criminal record declarations
  • No VFS/BLS involved — this is a direct government digital process, so avoid third-party sites charging extra for "processing"
  • ETA is valid for multiple trips over 2 years, so keep the same passport for your validity period
  • If you overstay the 6-month limit and wish to extend, you must apply for a different visa category before your ETA-permitted stay ends
