What you need

  • Passport validity: passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond date of entry and have at least 1 blank page.
  • Specific forms: no DS-160 or embassy forms; complete the official online eVisa application at the Malawi eVisa portal and upload required documents.
  • Financial proof: not routinely required for the eVisa; if requested, provide a bank statement showing funds sufficient for the stay (typical guidance is to show funds for the duration of stay).
  • Accommodation and return ticket: proof of accommodation and a return/onward travel plan may be requested during the online application or at entry.
  • Photo spec: digital passport-style photo (JPEG) with white background, size around 35x45 mm (or as specified on the portal), high resolution, no head coverings unless for religious reasons, no tinted glasses.
  • Biometrics: biometrics are not required as part of the online eVisa application; immigration may collect biometrics upon arrival if applicable.
  • Travel health insurance: recommended but not mandatory for Malawi eVisa.

Visa types

  • Malawi eVisa – Tourist: Official name Malawi eVisa – Tourist; validity typically 90 days from issue; maximum stay per visit around 30 days; single entry; approximate fee USD 50–75.

  • Malawi eVisa – Work: Work authorization requires a work permit in addition to entry; eVisa alone may not cover long-term work; approximate fee USD 100–150; process may involve separate employer/immigration steps.

Application process

  • How to apply online: go to https://www.evisa.gov.mw/; create an account, select the visa type (Tourist, Business, Student, or Work), fill in personal and travel details, upload required documents (passport bio page, photo, itinerary, accommodation), pay the visa fee with a card, and submit.
  • How approval arrives: you will receive an electronic visa document by email; print a copy or have it accessible on your mobile device to present on arrival.
  • Visa on arrival: Singapore citizens should not rely on visa-on-arrival for Malawi; apply for an eVisa online prior to travel.
  • Sticker visa: Malawi primarily issues eVisas online; if a consular or embassy-stamped visa is required for your case, contact the nearest Malawi embassy or consulate for instructions.
  • Entry conditions: eVisa is electronically linked to your passport; present the eVisa when crossing the border; ensure passport details match the visa.

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee (approximate): Tourist USD 50–75; Business USD 75–100; Student USD 100–150; Work USD 100–150; local currency equivalent (MWK) around 40,000–100,000 depending on category.
  • VFS/BLS service fee: Not applicable for Malawi eVisa; all fees are paid through the official portal.
  • Total cost estimate: sum of visa fee plus any optional express service.
  • Standard processing time: about 2–3 working days.
  • Express/priority: available in some cases; additional USD 20–30 or equivalent; turnaround within 12–24 hours depending on application load.
  • Delivery method: electronic visa issued by email; print or store on device for border control.

Tips for Singapore travelers

  • How far in advance to apply: apply at least 5–7 working days before travel; for longer stays or if pursuing student/work routes, apply as early as possible (2–3 weeks preferred).
  • Common rejection reasons for Singapore applicants: incomplete or inconsistent information, passport details not matching the passport image, passport validity too short, missing or poor-quality photo, failure to provide required supporting documents, or discrepancies between travel plans and visa type.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy application: Malawi eVisa is issued online via the official portal; avoid third-party brokers offering guaranteed approvals; use the official site for reliability and speed.
  • Travel advisories or bilateral notes: check Singapore MFA travel advisories and Malawi immigration updates before booking; ensure vaccinations and health advisories are up to date as per your itinerary.
  • Extension options inside Malawi: tourist visa extensions are sometimes possible by applying at the Department of Immigration in Lilongwe or Blantyre before expiry; extensions are granted at the discretion of immigration authorities and may incur fees.
