What you need

  • Passport validity: Passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond planned departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years, and have at least 2 blank pages.
  • Specific forms: No visa application form is required for visa-free entry. If you plan to apply for a visa in the future, use the online visa portal on vistoperitalia.esteri.it to start the application; for long-stay or other purposes you would submit the appropriate national visa application at the Italian embassy/consulate.
  • Financial proof: There is no fixed minimum funds requirement for visa-free entry; border authorities may ask for proof of funds. It is prudent to carry recent bank statements for the last 3 months or evidence of available funds (credit cards, travel budget).
  • Accommodation and return ticket: Have proof of accommodation for the stay (hotel bookings or invitation letter) and evidence of onward or return travel (return flight ticket or onward ticket).
  • Photo spec: For visa applications, typical photo specs are 35x45 mm with a light background; for visa-free entry you do not submit a separate visa photo, but ensure your passport photo is up to date.
  • Biometrics: Not required to submit biometrics for visa-free entry; if you apply for a visa in the future, you will provide biometrics at the embassy/consulate or visa center.
  • Travel health insurance: Not mandatory for visa-free entry; however, having travel medical insurance is recommended. If you later apply for a Schengen visa, you must have coverage of at least 30,000 EUR that is valid in all Schengen states.

Application process

  • How to apply online: Go to vistoperitalia.esteri.it, create an account and complete the online visa application for your chosen category.
  • Gather documents: See your category for the specific checklist (passport, photos if required by the visa, travel itinerary, proof of accommodation, travel insurance for visa, financial proof, etc.).
  • Book appointment: Schedule at the Italian Embassy in Singapore or approved visa center and submit documents in person; biometric data will be collected if required.
  • Pay fees: Visa fee for your category (short-stay 80 EUR; long-stay 116 EUR) plus any visa center service charges as applicable.
  • Processing time: Standard processing times are about 15 calendar days from the appointment date; allow up to 30 days during peak periods; expedited options may be available at extra cost where offered.
  • Approval results: The decision is posted in your online account; if approved, passport with visa is returned by the chosen collection method; if not, you will be notified and can request a review if applicable.
