What you need

  • Passport validity: Passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended date of departure from Belgium/Schengen and issued within the last 10 years.
  • Specific forms: No visa application form is required for short stays; if you plan a longer stay, you will be given the appropriate Belgian national visa form by the embassy or consulate for a Type D visa.
  • Financial proof: No fixed minimum amount; border control may request evidence of sufficient funds. Acceptable documents include bank statements from the last 3 months, recent payslips, or a letter from an employer confirming income and leave.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: Have evidence of accommodation (hotel bookings or invitation letter) and a return or onward travel ticket ready; border control may ask for these.
  • Photo spec: Two recent color passport photos 35x45 mm with a plain white background, taken within the last 6 months, head centered and facing forward.
  • Biometrics: No pre-travel biometrics submission is required for Belgium visa-free entry; if you later apply for a visa, you will be asked to provide biometrics at the embassy/visa center. Border control may scan your passport on arrival.
  • Travel health insurance: Recommended; not mandatory for visa-free entry, but carrying travel medical insurance is prudent. If requested, insurance should ideally cover the Schengen area with a minimum of 30,000 EUR in medical coverage.

  • Belgium national visa (Type D) – Work: Official name National visa (Type D) for work. Validity up to 12 months; max stay typically 12 months and extendable with work permit and residence authorization. Entry: Multiple entries may be granted. Approximate fee: 180 EUR.

Entry conditions
