Turkmenistan Visa for Kenya Citizens 2026

Visa Required

Turkmenistan is one of the most restrictive destinations for Kenyan travelers — a visa is mandatory and normally cannot be obtained without a Letter of Invitation (LOI) sponsored by a registered Turkmen tour operator or host, with processing taking several weeks and costs varying by visa category.

Guide last updated September 26, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the visa's expiry date
  • A Letter of Invitation (LOI) issued by the State Migration Service of Turkmenistan, arranged through a licensed local tour operator or host institution — this is mandatory and the visa cannot be processed without it
  • Completed visa application form
  • Two passport-size photos, 35mm x 45mm, white background
  • Confirmed flight itinerary
  • Detailed day-by-day itinerary if traveling on a tourist visa, since independent travel is heavily restricted
  • Biometric fingerprinting may be required on arrival at Ashgabat International Airport
  • Travel health insurance is strongly recommended, and mandatory COVID-era health screening requirements have historically applied at the border, so check current entry health rules before departure

Visa types

  • Tourist Visa - only issued alongside a registered guided tour, typically valid for 5-20 days, must be arranged through a Turkmen travel agency
  • Transit Visa - for onward travel through Turkmenistan by land, valid for up to 5 days, requires proof of onward visa/ticket
  • Business Visa - requires an LOI from a Turkmen company or government body, validity and stay length vary by invitation terms
  • Turkmenistan does not offer visa on arrival or e-visa options for Kenyan citizens; all categories require a pre-approved invitation.

How to apply

  • Engage a licensed Turkmen tour operator (for tourist visas) or your business host (for business visas) to obtain the mandatory LOI from the State Migration Service
  • Once the LOI is approved (this alone can take 2-4 weeks), submit your visa application, passport, photos, and LOI to the nearest Turkmen embassy — there is no Turkmen mission in Kenya, so applications typically route through the embassy in Cairo or via visa support agencies
  • Some travelers collect a visa-on-entry stamp at Ashgabat airport, but only when explicitly authorized in the LOI
  • Pay the visa fee either at the embassy or on arrival, depending on the arrangement specified in the LOI
  • Total lead time from LOI request to visa in hand commonly runs 4-8 weeks

Fees & processing time

  • LOI processing fee (paid to the tour operator/sponsor): typically USD 30-60
  • Visa fee: typically USD 55-85 depending on visa category and number of entries, paid at the embassy or on arrival per the LOI terms
  • No VFS center exists for Turkmenistan; all processing runs through the embassy or the sponsoring tour operator
  • Total cost estimate including guided tour requirements: often USD 300 or more once mandatory guiding/transport fees are included
  • Standard total processing time: 4-8 weeks from LOI request to visa issuance; there is no reliable express option

Tips for Kenya travelers

  • Start the LOI process at least 2 months before your intended travel date — this is the single biggest bottleneck for Kenyan applicants
  • Work only with tour operators registered with Turkmenistan's Ministry of Culture or State Migration Service to avoid invitation letters being rejected
  • Independent, unguided tourism is effectively not possible; budget for a full guided itinerary
  • Carry printed copies of your LOI and itinerary at all border checkpoints, as Turkmen officials frequently request them during the trip, not just at entry
  • Given the absence of a Turkmen embassy in Nairobi, allow extra time and cost for courier or in-person processing through Cairo or another regional embassy
