Tonga Visa for Kenya Citizens 2026

Visa Required

Kenyan citizens need a visa issued in advance to visit Tonga — apply through Tonga's Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the nearest accredited mission, since Tonga has no consular presence in Kenya; standard tourist visas run about TOP 80-120 (roughly USD 35-50) and take 2-4 weeks.

Guide last updated September 26, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates, with at least 2 blank pages
  • Completed Tonga visa application form (available from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade website, gov.to)
  • Confirmed return or onward air ticket
  • Proof of accommodation in Tonga (hotel booking or invitation letter from a resident/sponsor)
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for your stay (bank statement, minimum around USD 100 per day is commonly requested)
  • Two passport-size photos, 45mm x 35mm, plain white background
  • No biometric enrolment is required for a standard visitor visa
  • Travel health/medical insurance covering the Pacific region is strongly recommended, though not always mandatory

Visa types

  • Visitor's Permit/Visa - single entry, valid for a stay of up to 31 days, extendable; typical fee TOP 80-120
  • Business Visa - single or multiple entry, up to 31 days per visit, requires an invitation letter from a Tongan company
  • Transit Visa - for layovers exceeding a few hours, short validity, minimal fee
  • There is no separate long-stay tourist category; longer stays are handled through in-country extensions with Tonga's Immigration Division.

How to apply

  • Since Tonga has no embassy or consulate in Kenya, submit your application by post or courier to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Nuku'alofa, or through the nearest Tongan honorary consul (commonly reached via Australia or Fiji missions)
  • Alternatively, many Kenyan travelers route their application through Tonga's high commission in Wellington or Canberra if transiting those countries
  • Complete the application form, attach all supporting documents, and pay the visa fee by bank transfer
  • Processing typically takes 2-4 weeks, so apply well ahead of travel
  • Once approved, you receive an approval letter/visa to present on arrival at Fua'amotu International Airport

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: approximately TOP 80-120 (about USD 35-50), payable by bank transfer or bank draft
  • No separate VFS/BLS service center handles Tonga visas; fees are paid directly to the Tongan government
  • Total cost estimate including courier/postage for documents: USD 60-90
  • Standard processing time: 2-4 weeks from receipt of a complete application
  • No official express service is advertised; urgent cases should contact the Ministry directly

Tips for Kenya travelers

  • Apply at least 6-8 weeks before your travel date given postal/courier lead times to Tonga
  • The most common reason for delay is an incomplete financial proof or missing confirmed accommodation
  • Since there is no VFS or embassy in Nairobi, budget extra time for document courier both ways
  • Keep copies of everything you send, and request email confirmation of receipt from the Ministry
  • Extensions beyond 31 days can be requested in person at Tonga's Immigration Division in Nuku'alofa before your permit expires
