Guide last updated September 26, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid at least 3 months beyond the intended departure date, issued within the last 10 years, with 2 blank pages
  • Completed and signed Schengen visa application form
  • Two recent passport photos, 35x45mm, white background
  • Travel medical insurance covering at least EUR 30,000 for the entire Schengen area
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter)
  • Round-trip flight reservation
  • Bank statements for the last 3-6 months showing sufficient funds
  • Employment letter/leave approval or business registration documents
  • Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) required at the visa application centre for first-time applicants or those without valid biometrics on file in the last 5 years

Visa types

  • Airport Transit Visa (Type A) — for travelers transiting through a Spanish airport without entering Schengen territory
  • Short-stay Schengen Visa (Type C) — single, double, or multiple entry, valid up to 90 days within a 180-day period; covers tourism, business, and family visits
  • Long-stay/National Visa (Type D) — for work, study, or residence, applied for at the Spanish Embassy directly rather than VFS

How to apply

  • Kenyan applicants submit Schengen visa applications through VFS Global's Spain visa application centre in Nairobi. Book an appointment online, complete the application form, and submit all documents in person along with biometrics. Applications should be lodged 15-30 days before travel, and no earlier than 6 months prior. VFS forwards the file to the Spanish Consulate for a decision; applicants can track status online and collect the passport in person or via courier.

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: EUR 90 (approx. KES 12,500) for adults; EUR 45 for children aged 6-12; free for children under 6
  • VFS service fee: approximately KES 6,500 in addition to the visa fee
  • Standard processing time: 15 calendar days, extendable up to 30-45 days in complex cases
  • No formal premium/priority processing is generally offered for Schengen visas from Nairobi

Tips for Kenya travelers

  • Apply at least a month before travel dates to allow for processing delays
  • Common rejection reasons include insufficient funds, weak travel history, unclear purpose of visit, or inconsistent documents
  • VFS Global is the only authorized channel for Spain visa applications from Kenya; there is no direct embassy walk-in option
  • Ensure any invitation letter from family or friends is notarized and includes the host's ID and address in Spain
  • Extensions inside Spain are rare and only granted for exceptional circumstances via the local Oficina de Extranjería
