South Africa Visa for Kenya Citizens 2026

Visa Free

Kenyan citizens can enter South Africa visa-free for tourism or business stays of up to 90 days, needing only a valid passport, return ticket, and proof of sufficient funds and accommodation at the port of entry.

Guide last updated September 25, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 30 days beyond the intended date of departure from South Africa, with at least 2 blank pages
  • No advance visa application required for stays up to 90 days
  • Confirmed return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or address of host)
  • Proof of sufficient funds for the stay (cash, card, or bank statement)
  • No photo required for visa-free entry
  • Biometrics: fingerprints and facial photo captured at the immigration counter on arrival (South Africa uses biometric border control at major airports)
  • Travel health insurance: recommended but not mandatory; a yellow fever certificate is required if arriving from or transiting through a yellow-fever-endemic country

Visa types

  • Visitor's Visa Waiver Entry — visa-free tourism or business entry, up to 90 days, no fee
  • Business Visa — required instead of the waiver if undertaking activities beyond short meetings, such as formal contract negotiations tied to local employment
  • Work Visa / Critical Skills Visa — for employment, applied for in advance through a South African mission or VFS Global
  • Study Visa — for enrollment at a South African institution, applied for in advance

Entry conditions

  • Kenyan passport holders do not need a visa for tourism or general business visits of up to 90 days
  • Present your passport, return ticket, and proof of accommodation and funds to immigration on arrival at O.R. Tambo, Cape Town, or another port of entry
  • Working for a South African employer is not permitted under the visa-free entry; a separate work visa is required
  • Extensions beyond 90 days can be requested at a Department of Home Affairs office inside South Africa, subject to justification, though extensions are not guaranteed and overstaying carries penalties
  • Travelers arriving from Kenya must present a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate given Kenya's yellow-fever-endemic status

Fees & processing time

  • Visa-free entry: no fee
  • Visitor's Visa extension at Home Affairs (if approved): fee approximately ZAR 1,520 (approx. USD 85)
  • Extension processing time: several weeks, so applications should be lodged well before the 90 days expire
  • No express option needed for initial entry since it is immediate and visa-free

Tips for Kenya travelers

  • Always carry your yellow fever certificate, as this is checked strictly for travelers arriving from Kenya
  • Keep proof of accommodation and return tickets accessible, since immigration officers can still request them despite visa-free entry
  • If your trip involves any paid work or a long-term business assignment, confirm in advance whether a Business or Work Visa is required instead of relying on the visa waiver
  • Kenya Airways offers frequent direct flights between Nairobi and Johannesburg, making this one of the more convenient regional routes
  • Track your 90-day limit carefully, since overstaying can result in being declared 'undesirable' and banned from re-entering South Africa for a period of years
