Visa on Arrival

Kenyan citizens can obtain a visa on arrival at Freetown's Lungi International Airport for stays of up to 30 days, after completing an arrival form and paying the visa fee in cash or by card.

Guide last updated September 25, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of arrival
  • No advance application — the visa is issued on arrival against a completed arrival card
  • Confirmed return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or host address)
  • Proof of funds sufficient for the length of stay
  • One passport photo recommended in case of manual visa issuance, though not always requested
  • Biometrics: fingerprints and photo captured at the immigration desk on arrival
  • Travel health insurance: recommended, and a yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for travelers arriving from Kenya

Visa types

  • Tourist Visa on Arrival — single entry, valid up to 30 days, extendable
  • Business Visa on Arrival — single entry, up to 30 days, requires an invitation letter from a Sierra Leonean company
  • Multiple-entry Visa — available through the Sierra Leone High Commission network in advance for frequent business travelers

Visa on arrival

  • Arrive at Lungi International Airport, Freetown, and proceed to the immigration counter after collecting your arrival card
  • Present your passport, yellow fever certificate, return ticket, and proof of accommodation
  • Pay the visa-on-arrival fee (approx. USD 80, cash preferred, though card payment is increasingly accepted) directly at the counter
  • An officer stamps the 30-day visa into your passport, generally within 15-30 minutes
  • Business travelers should have their invitation letter ready to reduce processing time

Fees & processing time

  • Visa on arrival fee: approximately USD 80 for a single-entry 30-day tourist visa
  • No separate service fee since the visa is issued directly by immigration at the airport
  • Standard processing: 15-30 minutes on arrival
  • Extension at the Sierra Leone Immigration Department in Freetown: approximately USD 50-100 depending on duration, processed within 3-5 working days

Tips for Kenya travelers

  • Carry US dollars in cash for the visa fee, as card payment facilities at the airport can be unreliable
  • Always travel with your yellow fever certificate, since Sierra Leone strictly checks proof of vaccination for arrivals from Kenya
  • Book accommodation in advance, as immigration officers may ask to see a confirmed booking
  • If extending your stay, begin the process at the Immigration Department in Freetown well before your 30-day visa expires
  • There are no direct flights from Nairobi, so plan connections via Addis Ababa, Accra, or Lagos and check any transit visa requirements for those stops
