San Marino Visa for Kenya Citizens 2026

Visa Required

San Marino has no border controls of its own and is only reachable overland from Italy, so Kenyan citizens need a standard Italian Schengen visa (there is no separate San Marino visa) obtained through the Italian Consulate before travel.

Guide last updated September 25, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years, with 2 blank pages
  • Completed Schengen visa application form (applied for at the Italian Consulate, since San Marino has no consulates issuing its own visas)
  • Financial proof: bank statements showing at least EUR 50-70 per day of stay, or a sponsorship letter
  • Confirmed round-trip flight itinerary and hotel bookings covering the whole Schengen trip, including San Marino
  • Passport-size photo, 35mm x 45mm, white background, taken within the last 6 months
  • Biometrics: fingerprints and digital photo captured in person at a VFS Global Italy visa application centre in Nairobi
  • Travel health insurance: mandatory, minimum EUR 30,000 coverage valid across the whole Schengen area including San Marino

Visa types

  • Schengen Type C Tourist Visa — single or multiple entry, valid up to 90 days within a 180-day period, covers San Marino as it is embedded in Italian territory
  • Schengen Type C Business Visa — for meetings/conferences, same validity rules, requires an invitation letter
  • Schengen Type D National Visa (Italy) — only relevant if the visit to San Marino is combined with longer study/work purposes in Italy

How to apply

  • Book an appointment with the Italian Consulate's visa partner, VFS Global, in Nairobi
  • Submit the Schengen application form, passport, photos, travel insurance, itinerary showing San Marino as part of the trip, and financial proof
  • Attend the biometric appointment in person; interviews are occasionally required for first-time applicants
  • Pay the Schengen visa fee (EUR 90 for adults, EUR 45 for children aged 6-11) plus the VFS service fee (approx. USD 30-40)
  • Standard processing takes 15 calendar days from a complete application, though this can extend to 30-45 days during peak season
  • Once approved, the visa sticker is placed in your passport for collection at the VFS centre

Fees & processing time

  • Schengen visa fee: EUR 90 (approx. USD 97) for adults; EUR 45 for children 6-11; free for children under 6
  • VFS Global service fee: approximately USD 30-40, payable in Kenyan shillings
  • Total estimated cost: USD 130-150
  • Standard processing: 15 working days
  • No official express service for short-stay Schengen visas; some VFS centres offer a 'Premium Lounge' add-on for faster document handling, not faster visa decisions

Tips for Kenya travelers

  • Apply at least 4-6 weeks before travel, since San Marino trips are usually combined with an Italy itinerary and processing can run long during summer
  • Common rejection reasons for Kenyan applicants include insufficient bank statement history (fewer than 3-6 months), unclear travel purpose, and weak ties to Kenya (no proof of employment or property)
  • Always apply through VFS Global rather than trying to contact San Marino directly, since San Marino itself has no visa-issuing consulate in Kenya
  • Include a day-by-day itinerary explicitly mentioning San Marino to avoid confusion at the interview
  • There is no extension possible inside San Marino itself; any extension must be sought through Italian immigration authorities before the Schengen visa expires
