Guide last updated September 25, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended stay, with at least 2 blank pages
  • Digital passport photo (color, white background) uploaded during the online application
  • Confirmed return/onward flight ticket
  • Letter of invitation from a host individual or company in Nigeria (required for most e-Visa categories)
  • Proof of accommodation and sufficient funds for the stay
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate (mandatory for entry into Nigeria)
  • No advance biometric enrollment required; fingerprints and photograph are captured at the port of entry when the visa is issued/stamped
  • Travel health insurance is recommended, though not strictly mandatory for the e-Visa category

Visa types

  • Short-visit e-Visa (tourism/business): single entry, valid for use within 90 days of pre-approval, permits a stay of up to 90 days, fee approximately USD 160
  • Nigeria Visa on Arrival Pre-Approval: pre-cleared online, visa physically issued/stamped at the airport on arrival, commonly used by business travelers
  • Temporary Work Permit (TWP) e-Visa: for short-term work assignments, requires a Nigerian sponsoring company, higher documentation requirements
  • The Nigerian High Commission in Nairobi (or nigeriahighcommission.in as a reference point for consular contacts) can advise on categories outside the standard short-visit visa

How to apply online

  • Apply at portal.immigration.gov.ng, the official Nigeria Immigration Service e-Visa portal
  • Create an account, complete the online form, and upload your passport bio page, photo, invitation letter, and yellow fever certificate
  • Pay the applicable fee online by card (approximately USD 160 for the short-visit category)
  • Processing takes about 5 business days; you receive a pre-approval letter/e-Visa reference by email
  • Present the pre-approval printout, passport, and supporting documents at the port of entry (Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, or Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja), where the visa is formally issued/stamped
  • Retain the pre-approval reference number, as it is required both for airline check-in and for the on-arrival visa desk

Fees & processing time

  • Short-visit e-Visa fee: approximately USD 160, paid online during application
  • No separate VFS/agent service fee since the application is submitted directly through the government portal
  • Standard processing time: about 5 business days for pre-approval
  • No official express lane advertised; applying at least 2 weeks before travel is recommended to avoid last-minute issues

Tips for Kenya travelers

  • Apply at least 2-3 weeks before travel to allow time for pre-approval and any follow-up document requests
  • The most common delay for Kenyan applicants is an incomplete or informal invitation letter — ensure it is on official letterhead with the host's contact details and purpose of visit clearly stated
  • Keep the pre-approval confirmation readily accessible (printed and digital), as airlines will not board passengers without proof of pre-approval for e-Visa/visa-on-arrival routes
  • Extensions of stay within Nigeria can be requested at the Nigeria Immigration Service headquarters in Abuja before the visa expires
  • Confirm current entry requirements directly with the Nigeria Immigration Service portal, as fees and categories are periodically revised
