New Zealand Visa for Kenya Citizens 2026

Visa Required

Kenyan citizens need a Visitor Visa for New Zealand (NZeTA does not apply to Kenya) — apply online via Immigration New Zealand; fee is NZD 246, processing typically several weeks.

Guide last updated September 25, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure from New Zealand
  • Completed online visitor visa application through the Immigration New Zealand (INZ) portal (immigration.govt.nz)
  • Digital passport photo meeting INZ's biometric photo standard
  • Biometrics (fingerprints and photograph) required at the nearest visa application center handling New Zealand visas for Kenyan applicants (typically processed via VFS Global in a regional hub, since New Zealand has no dedicated visa center in Kenya)
  • Proof of sufficient funds (bank statements, roughly NZD 1,000/month or NZD 400/month if accommodation is prepaid)
  • Proof of accommodation and travel itinerary
  • Return or onward travel ticket, or evidence of funds to purchase one
  • Health and character requirements: a medical certificate/chest X-ray may be requested for stays over 6 months; police clearance certificate required if requested by INZ
  • Travel/medical insurance is strongly recommended, though not always mandatory for the visitor category

Visa types

  • Visitor Visa: single or multiple entry, standard validity up to 9 months within an 18-month period, fee NZD 246 (online application)
  • Business Visitor Visa: same application stream, for attending meetings or conferences, no local employment permitted
  • Student and Work visas: separate categories with additional documentation (offer of place/employment) and fees starting around NZD 375 and up, processed separately
  • The NZeTA (Electronic Travel Authority) applies only to visa-waiver country nationals and does not apply to Kenyan passport holders

How to apply

  • Applications are lodged online through the Immigration New Zealand website (immigration.govt.nz/new-zealand-visas), where you create an account and complete the Visitor Visa application form
  • Upload scanned supporting documents (passport bio page, bank statements, itinerary, etc.)
  • Book a biometrics appointment at the designated visa application partner (VFS Global) covering Kenya, since biometric enrollment is mandatory for most applicants
  • Pay the visa fee online (NZD 246) plus the biometrics/service fee
  • INZ reviews the application remotely; interviews are uncommon but additional information may be requested by email
  • Decisions and passport return instructions are communicated through the online account and, if a physical passport stamp/label is required, via courier from the processing office (applications from Kenya are often processed out of the Pretoria or New Delhi INZ branch)
  • The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (mfat.govt.nz) can direct you to the nearest accredited mission for supplementary consular matters

Fees & processing time

  • Visitor Visa fee: NZD 246 for online applications (roughly USD 150)
  • Biometrics/VFS service fee: approximately USD 100-130, payable locally
  • Total estimated cost: around USD 250-280 combined
  • Standard processing time: typically 3-6 weeks, but can extend to 2-3 months during peak periods or if additional documents are requested
  • No official express/priority processing is offered for standard Visitor Visas

Tips for Kenya travelers

  • Apply at least 2-3 months before your intended travel date given the multi-week processing and biometrics scheduling
  • The most common rejection reasons for Kenyan applicants are insufficient evidence of funds, unclear travel purpose, and weak evidence of intent to return to Kenya (e.g., no proof of employment, property, or family ties)
  • Since New Zealand does not have a visa application center directly in Kenya, budget extra time and cost for biometrics travel or courier-based document submission
  • Keep all financial and supporting documents recent (within 1-3 months) and translated into English if originally in another language
  • Extensions of stay while in New Zealand can be requested through INZ before the current visa expires, but approval is not guaranteed and is assessed case by case
