Guide last updated September 25, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry
  • One recent passport-size photo (color, white background) — a photo booth is also available at Tribhuvan International Airport if you arrive without one
  • Completed arrival visa application form (available online for pre-fill via nepaliimmigration.gov.np, or paper form on arrival)
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking) and onward/return ticket recommended, though not always checked
  • Sufficient funds for the stay (cash or card)
  • No biometrics required in advance; fingerprints and photo are captured at the immigration counter on arrival
  • Travel health insurance covering trekking/high-altitude activities is strongly recommended if visiting mountain regions

Visa types

  • Tourist visa on arrival, 15 days, multiple entry, fee USD 30
  • Tourist visa on arrival, 30 days, multiple entry, fee USD 50
  • Tourist visa on arrival, 90 days, multiple entry, fee USD 125
  • Gratis (free) visa is available for children under 10 and for nationals of SAARC countries — this does not apply to Kenyan citizens
  • Business and work visas are not issued on arrival and must be arranged in advance through the Department of Immigration or the Nepal embassy (mofa.gov.np)

Visa on arrival

  • Available at Tribhuvan International Airport (Kathmandu) and at designated land border crossings with India and China (e.g., Kakarbhitta, Birgunj, Kodari)
  • On arrival, fill out the arrival visa form (or use the online pre-application at nepaliimmigration.gov.np to get a QR code that speeds up processing)
  • Proceed to the visa counter, submit your photo, passport, and completed form
  • Pay the fee in cash (USD preferred; other major currencies and cards are accepted at the airport but not always at land borders) — land border crossings may only accept cash, so carry USD
  • The visa sticker/stamp is issued within minutes at the airport; land border processing can take longer
  • Queues at Tribhuvan Airport can be long during peak season (October-November, March-April) — using the online pre-registration QR code significantly speeds up the process

Fees & processing time

  • 15 days: USD 30; 30 days: USD 50; 90 days: USD 125, payable in cash (USD) or card at the airport counter
  • No separate service fee for visa on arrival
  • Processing at the airport: typically 15-30 minutes when the pre-registration QR code is used, longer during peak arrival periods
  • No express/priority lane specifically for visa processing, though the online pre-registration is the closest equivalent

Tips for Kenya travelers

  • Complete the online pre-arrival registration on nepaliimmigration.gov.np before your flight to avoid long queues at Kathmandu airport
  • Carry USD cash in small denominations, since currency exchange counters near the visa desk can have long lines too
  • A common issue for African travelers is being asked for additional documentation (return ticket, hotel booking) at officer discretion — carry printed copies
  • Extensions beyond the visa validity can be obtained at the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu (nepaliimmigration.gov.np) for a daily fee, up to a maximum stay of 150 days per calendar year
  • If trekking in restricted areas (e.g., Upper Mustang, Manaslu), a separate special permit is required in addition to the visa
