Guide last updated September 25, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended departure date from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years
  • Completed and signed Schengen visa application form
  • Proof of sufficient funds: bank statements for the last 3 months, minimum approx. EUR 48/day of stay
  • Confirmed round-trip flight reservation and detailed travel itinerary
  • Proof of accommodation for the entire stay (hotel bookings or invitation letter)
  • Two recent passport photos (35mm x 45mm, white background, taken within the last 6 months)
  • Biometrics: fingerprints and digital photo captured in person at the VFS Global Malta visa application centre in Nairobi
  • Schengen travel health insurance with minimum EUR 30,000 medical coverage, valid for the whole Schengen area

Visa types

  • Schengen Tourist/Visit Visa (Type C): single or multiple entry, valid up to 90 days within a 180-day period, fee EUR 90 for adults (EUR 45 for children 6-12)
  • Business Visa: same Type C category, requires an invitation letter from a Maltese company, same fee structure
  • Student/long-stay National Visa (Type D): for study beyond 90 days, applied for separately through the Maltese authorities, fee varies

How to apply

  • Book an appointment and submit your application through VFS Global's Malta visa application centre in Nairobi (Malta uses VFS for Kenya-based applicants)
  • Complete the online Schengen visa form and gather all required documents before your appointment
  • Attend the appointment in person to submit biometrics, documents, and pay the visa fee
  • Standard processing time is up to 15 working days, though it can extend to 30 days during peak season or if additional checks are needed
  • An interview is not always required but may be requested for first-time applicants or complex cases
  • Decisions are communicated via VFS, and passports with visa stickers are returned through the centre or courier

Fees & processing time

  • Schengen visa fee: EUR 90 for adults, EUR 45 for children aged 6-12, free for children under 6
  • VFS Global service fee: approximately KES 3,000-4,000 (varies), in addition to the visa fee
  • Total estimated cost: roughly EUR 90 plus VFS service charge, payable in KES at the prevailing exchange rate
  • Standard processing: up to 15 working days from the appointment date
  • No official express/priority service is offered for Malta visas via VFS Nairobi; apply early to allow for delays

Tips for Kenya travelers

  • Apply at least 4-6 weeks before your planned travel date to allow for processing delays
  • Common rejection reasons for Kenyan applicants include insufficient proof of funds, unclear travel purpose, and weak ties to Kenya (job, property, family) that could suggest overstay risk
  • Book refundable flights and hotel reservations where possible until the visa is approved
  • VFS Global is the only official channel for Malta visa submission in Nairobi - avoid unofficial agents claiming to guarantee approval
  • Extensions within Malta are only granted in exceptional circumstances (medical emergency, force majeure) through the Maltese immigration authorities
