Visa Free

Kenyan citizens do not need a visa to enter Malawi for stays of up to 90 days — simply present a valid passport and return ticket on arrival, no advance application required.

Guide last updated September 25, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry, with at least 1 blank page
  • No visa or advance application required for stays up to 90 days
  • Return or onward flight/travel ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or host address)
  • Proof of sufficient funds for the visit if requested by immigration
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate recommended given travel from Kenya
  • Biometrics: passport stamped on arrival; no fingerprinting required for visa-free entry

Visa types

  • Visa-free tourist entry — no visa category needed, granted at the border for up to 90 days within a 12-month period
  • Work/Study/Residence permits — required separately for longer stays or employment, applied for through Malawi's Department of Immigration
  • Business visa — not required for short business visits under the visa-free arrangement, though an invitation letter is advisable

Entry conditions

  • Kenyan passport holders are admitted visa-free for tourism, family visits, and short business trips for up to 90 days per visit
  • Employment is not permitted under visa-free entry — a separate work permit is required for paid work
  • On arrival, present your passport, return ticket, and be ready to state your accommodation address
  • Extensions beyond 90 days must be requested at the Department of Immigration in Lilongwe or Blantyre before the initial period expires
  • Malawi also offers an online e-visa system (evisa.gov.mw) as an alternative for travelers who prefer pre-arrival approval, though it is not required for Kenyan citizens

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee for entry, since Kenyan citizens travel visa-free
  • No service/VFS fee applicable for the visa-free route
  • Total cost: USD 0 for entry itself, aside from standard border formalities
  • Processing time: immediate, done at the immigration desk on arrival
  • The optional e-visa (evisa.gov.mw), if used instead, costs approximately USD 50 and takes 3-5 business days to process

Tips for Kenya travelers

  • Even though no visa is required, carry proof of return travel and accommodation, as immigration officers can still deny entry without them
  • Bring your yellow fever vaccination certificate, as it may be checked on arrival from Kenya
  • If planning to work or study, arrange the correct permit through Malawi's Department of Immigration before traveling
  • Keep your passport valid well beyond the 6-month minimum to avoid airline check-in issues
  • Register with the Kenyan High Commission in Lilongwe if staying for an extended period
