Guide last updated September 25, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years, with 2 blank pages
  • Completed Schengen visa application form
  • Two recent biometric passport-size photos (35x45mm)
  • Proof of accommodation for the entire stay
  • Round-trip flight itinerary
  • Proof of sufficient funds (bank statements for the last 3 months, or a sponsor's letter)
  • Schengen travel health insurance with minimum EUR 30,000 coverage
  • Biometrics: fingerprints and digital photo taken in person, valid for 59 months if already on file

Visa types

  • Schengen Type C Tourist visa — single, double, or multiple entry, valid up to 90 days within any 180-day period, fee EUR 80
  • Schengen Type C Business visa — for conferences and meetings, similar validity, fee EUR 80
  • National Type D visa — for study, work, or long-term stay, validity over 90 days, requires additional documents and is processed directly by Latvian authorities

How to apply

  • Book an appointment at the Latvian embassy/consulate covering Kenya, or an authorized visa application centre where available
  • Submit the completed form with all supporting documents and biometrics in person
  • Pay the EUR 80 visa fee (plus any application centre service fee, typically EUR 25-30) by card or local currency equivalent
  • Standard processing takes up to 15 calendar days, extendable to 30-45 days in complex cases
  • Passport and decision are returned by courier or in-person collection

Fees & processing time

  • Schengen visa fee: EUR 80 (about USD 87) for adults, EUR 40 for children aged 6-12, free under 6
  • Application centre service fee: typically EUR 25-30 additional
  • Total estimated cost: USD 110-130
  • Standard processing: 15 calendar days from a complete application
  • No official express service for short-stay Schengen visas; apply early

Tips for Kenya travelers

  • Apply at least 3-4 weeks before travel, since Schengen appointments can have waiting lists
  • Common rejection reasons: insufficient bank balance, unclear purpose of travel, weak ties to Kenya (job letter, property, family)
  • If Latvia is not your main Schengen destination, apply at the embassy of the country where you'll spend the most nights
  • A Schengen visa issued by Latvia allows travel to all other Schengen states during its validity
  • Extensions inside Latvia are rare and only granted for exceptional circumstances (medical emergency, force majeure)
