What you need

  • Passport valid for the duration of the intended stay, with at least 2 blank pages
  • Completed visa application form with a recent passport photo, 45x45mm, white background, attached
  • Detailed itinerary of the visit
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel bookings or invitation letter from a host in Japan)
  • Bank statements for the last 3-6 months showing sufficient funds
  • Employment or business registration letter confirming ties to Kenya
  • Return or onward flight reservation
  • Biometrics are not routinely required for short-stay visa applications submitted through the embassy

Visa types

  • Temporary Visitor visa (Tourist): single entry, up to 90 days, fee approx. JPY 3,000
  • Temporary Visitor visa (Multiple entry, for repeat business travelers): fee approx. JPY 6,000
  • Business visa: for short-term commercial visits, requires an invitation from the host company in Japan
  • Student/Work visa: requires a Certificate of Eligibility issued in Japan before applying at the embassy, and covers longer stays

How to apply

  • Submit the application in person (or through an authorized travel agency) at the Embassy of Japan in Nairobi
  • Provide the completed form, photo, passport, and full supporting document set
  • Pay the visa fee at the time of collection, once the visa has been approved
  • Applications are typically not submitted online; check the embassy's current guidance for any digital pre-registration steps
  • Track status by contacting the embassy or the appointed visa application center, if applicable

Fees & processing time

  • Single-entry visa fee: approx. JPY 3,000 (roughly USD 20)
  • Multiple-entry visa fee: approx. JPY 6,000 (roughly USD 40)
  • No separate VFS-style service fee since the embassy processes applications directly in most cases
  • Standard processing time: approximately 5 working days from submission of a complete application
  • No express service is generally offered; apply with sufficient lead time before travel

Tips for Kenya travelers

  • Apply at least 3-4 weeks ahead of travel to allow time for document preparation and embassy processing
  • Common rejection reasons: incomplete itinerary, insufficient proof of funds, or unclear purpose of visit
  • A detailed day-by-day itinerary is often expected and helps demonstrate a genuine tourism or business purpose
  • Japan does not accept visa applications through third-party countries for Kenyan residents - apply directly at the Nairobi embassy
  • Extensions of a Temporary Visitor visa are rarely granted; plan the trip length carefully before applying
