Guide last updated September 25, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry
  • At least 2 blank pages for visa stamps
  • Passport-size photo (may be requested at the counter or during online pre-registration)
  • Confirmed hotel booking or invitation letter
  • Travel medical insurance covering Iran, sometimes sold at the airport counter itself
  • Return or onward flight ticket
  • No biometrics required at the VOA counter, though fingerprints may be taken for e-Visa applicants at some points of entry

Visa types

  • Visa on Arrival (Tourist): single entry, up to 30 days, extendable once inside Iran, fee approx. EUR 75-100 depending on nationality-based pricing
  • e-Visa (Tourist authorization code): applied for online in advance via e_visa.mfa.ir, then collected as a visa or entry authorization at the airport
  • Business visa: arranged in advance through the Iranian Embassy in Nairobi with an invitation letter from an Iranian company
  • Transit visa: up to 7 days for onward travel, requires proof of onward journey

Visa on arrival

  • Available at Imam Khomeini International Airport (Tehran) and a limited number of other airports; not available at land borders for most nationalities
  • On arrival, go to the visa counter, submit passport and photo, pay the fee in EUR or USD cash (cards are generally not usable due to banking sanctions)
  • Getting the e-Visa authorization code online beforehand speeds up the airport process significantly and is strongly recommended
  • Mandatory travel insurance can be purchased at the same counter if not already arranged
  • Processing at the counter typically takes 30-60 minutes

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: approximately EUR 75-100 depending on current nationality-based fee schedules
  • Mandatory travel insurance (if not pre-arranged): approx. EUR 15-20, often payable at the airport
  • No separate agency fee for VOA, but e-Visa authorization pre-approval may involve a small online service charge
  • e-Visa online pre-approval: typically 5-15 working days
  • On-arrival stamping once pre-approved: usually under an hour

Tips for Kenya travelers

  • Apply for the e-Visa authorization code online at least 2-3 weeks before travel to avoid delays or refusal at the airport counter
  • Carry EUR or USD cash in good condition (no small tears or marks) since card payments are generally not accepted due to international sanctions
  • Common issues: incomplete online pre-registration, lack of proof of accommodation, or travel history to certain other countries triggering extra scrutiny
  • Dress code and conduct rules apply from the moment of arrival - review Iran's entry requirements for appropriate attire
  • Extensions of the 30-day VOA can be done at police immigration offices inside Iran for a modest fee
